Known as ‘the little tuna’, gopu mackerel tuna travel in schools and is a very mobile migratory species. Its annual journey encompasses much of the Indo-west oceanic region. Its most notable feature are distinctive, broken, diagonal stripes that decorate its lower back towards the tail, and multiple dark spots near its pelvic fin.

An important commercial species in many countries, the gopu mackerel tuna is a fast-swimming, agile hunter, feeding on shrimp, cephalopods and smaller fish. Preferring tropical and temperate climates,  it is  found in waters off Western and northern Australia, down to the south coast of New South Wales.
