darrapa
Darrapa is a large, bluish-green schooling fish, speckled along its sides with small golden spots. It is found off the northern coasts of Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales, in deep offshore coral and rock reefs. During spawning season, they head for more tropical waters, to release their young. Growing almost a metre in length and weighing almost 15 kg, darrapa is considered to be ‘a good game fish but a bad meal’, due their soft, oily flesh when cooked. Its more general use as bait inspired the name ‘bludger’ trevally.
