Joan Wright was only 19 in 1944 when she met Ted Heim at a local dance at the Marrickville Town Hall. They married when she was 20, and on the SS MONTEREY on the way to San Francisco with baby in tow, Joan turned 22. Ted had a good impression of Australia when he arrived as a Navy radio operator in 1943. He liked the Australian women’s natural beauty, so when he saw a doll-like Joan at the dance in a white lace dress he just couldn’t take his eyes off her. When Joan went to America in 1946 she really didn’t feel like she was leaving Australia forever, but it was nine years before she returned to visit. Ted spent 30 years in the US military before he and Joan moved back to Australia in 1974. |
