Virtual Ocean Talks: Ocean Defenders

Join us for a lively virtual discussion with ocean science experts on the health of our rivers, streams, oceans and seas.

Thank you to everyone who took part in our recent Virtual Ocean Talk. If you'd like to rewatch the talk, or if you were unable to make it on the night, here's a recorded version for you to enjoy.

As the national maritime museum for an island nation, this Virtual Ocean Talk will address how the health of our rivers, streams, oceans and seas stands as our biggest challenge and most important objective. Hear from some of the nation's most important ocean defenders and innovators as they work to address the most critical issues of the twenty-first century. See how what we do will have a real and lasting impact on the health of Australian and the world's waterways for decades and even generations to come.

Dr Julia Reisser

Dr Julia Reisser is an ocean scientist with a PhD in Plastic Pollution. She has published 25+ scientific articles to date, with her research been ranked in the world’s top 10 highest-scoring articles in 2015 and 2018. Julia is now doing a part-time MBA in Entrepreneurship and Innovation to complement the skills she gained from more than 15 years of experience setting up, managing and leading research programs for universities, start-ups and foundations, including The Ocean Cleanup, Australian Institute of Marine Science and Minderoo Foundation. She is currently an Adjunct Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia and co-founder of Uluu: a start-up developing ocean biomaterials for healthier people, seas and climates. Julia loves Olympic weightlifting, running, diving, dancing and travelling. She has been part of many scientific expeditions in the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Antarctic oceans, but the Arctic is still in her ‘missions dream’ list.

Tim Silverwood

Tim Silverwood, Ocean Impact Organisation, is an award-winning environmentalist committed to reducing human impacts on the natural world. A keen surfer, Tim became alarmed at the risks plastic pollution posed to our oceans and wildlife, co-founding the not-for-profit organisation Take 3 for the Sea in 2009.

After 10 years building Take 3 into a social movement and successful charity, Tim launched Ocean Impact Organisation (OIO) in 2020. OIO is Australia’s first ocean impact ecosystem and start up accelerator helping people to start, grow and invest in businesses that positively impact the ocean. Tim’s focus and mission with OIO is to create an abundant and sustainable ocean through inspiration, innovation, leadership and good business.

Tim is a passionate presenter, commentator and facilitator who has delivered hundreds of talks and workshops to businesses, government agencies, schools, communities and conferences. A regular fixture in news and media, Tim delivers a firm, reasoned and insightful case for ‘business as unusual’ to create an abundant and sustainable future for Planet Ocean and its inhabitants.

Jeff Hansen

Jeff Hansen is the Managing Director for Sea Shepherd Australia and a Director for Sea Shepherd Global. Jeff joined Sea Shepherd in 2006 to pursue his passion for marine conservation and protecting the natural world. Serving as a crew-member on two Antarctic whale defence campaigns, Jeff was instrumental in locating the illegal whaling fleet on both occasions.

Since Jeff’s baptism of fire with Sea Shepherd, he has not looked back. Jeff continues to play a pivotal role in driving Sea Shepherd both nationally and globally in tackling the three key threats to our oceans: illegal fishing, plastic pollution and climate change. Jeff thinks that no matter the opposition, when ordinary people come together, extraordinary things can happen, and if there is one thing worth fighting for on this planet, it's life!
