Mavis Dean joined the Women’s Royal Australian Naval Service (WRANS) in 1942 and was assigned to assist with running messages for the US Navy Intelligence based in Melbourne.

Delno Forbes was stationed there from May 1943 to December 1944 and he thought Mavis was “not a bad looking sort”.

Mavis and Del began seeing each other and on a very hot day at the beach Del proposed. The next thing he had to do was convince her mother… and the US Navy.

Del always felt that the hospitality shown him by the Australian people was exceptional, so when Mavis wanted to return to Australia in 1948 he was happy to follow her. They returned to Victoria where they both participated in the ANMM oral history survey in 1991.
