Letter 1 to Boat
Greetings Mister SeaStrider
It has appeared that your burdensome chain has displaced a number of my relatives, leaving them without an abode.
I am uncertain if you are aware, but the White’s seahorse, one of my companions, who resides within my leaves, is in inevitable danger. You have disrupted my serenity AND the stability of our entire ecosystem.
We Posidonia absorb vast amounts of carbon from the atmosphere, more than any equivalent area of forest on land. But we also store it safely deep in the seabed. Yet by up-ending me and my family you are releasing thousands of years of carefully captured carbon back into the environment. Of course, this is sir, a concerning problem.
Your consideration and cooperation would be greatly appreciated in remedying this grave situation.
Sincerely,
Posidonia australis
Letter 2 to Posidonia:
Good day, Posidonia,
I simply cannot comprehend my chain causing any harm. It is common knowledge that boats have populated Sydney Harbor for many years, and I, have never been confronted about a problem so devastating as this.
I deny any destruction caused to your relatives. If they were in harm, they did not show it. (to self: Although, on second thought, maybe those were crustaceans screaming, or was it the carbon releasing?...) In any case, I would like some further evidence on how I may have deviated.
With appreciation,
Sea Strider
Letter 3 to boat
Dear Mister Sea Strider
It is quite apparent that you are hesitant to believe the fact of the destruction you have caused in my homeland.
I share this quandry with many confidants, including infauna and epifauna, who are essentially overlooked due to their miniscule size. The infauna lives under and in my roots, and the epifauna resides in my leaves. I have also consulted other field dwellers too, including the Pajama Squid, Eastern Blue Groper, and the protected Little Penguin, who forages for fish nearby. I have no means to boast, but without me, these fellows along with 1000’s of juvenile species have nowhere to grow up safely. And the fine sailing weather that you so enjoy will be threatened by warming waters and a greater number and severity of storms if all this carbon continues to be unleashed. Your anchor and mooring chain, can destroy Posidonia and seagrass in a single night, whereas it takes me centuries to grow back after such devastation.
Please do try, to the extent of your abilities, to find a solution, as it will be a benefit for us all.
Kind Regards,
Posidonia.
Letter 4 to Posidonia:
My Dear Friend, Posidonia.
I cannot wait to tell you of my journeys in Queensland. It was the grandest trip of my life! I must tell you, I discovered a wonder!
There I was, pulled up in Moreton Bay, clear water and sunny skies, only to realise there was no chain on the other boats moorings, instead a buoyant marvel, with thriving seagrass meadows underneath!
This eco-friendly mooring buoy had allowed this boat to both moor itself securely, and for the meadows below to thrive! By the next time we write, I will have gained one of these for myself.
Best fishes,
Mr Sea Strider
Letter 5 to Boat:
Dearest Sea Strider,
It was a great pleasure to receive your last letter. I am elated to hear about this breakthrough, which certainly gave us all the peace we needed! My family and inhabitants are eternally grateful. At last, this lush meadow will be restored to its former beauty!
Related, I’ve seen these peculiar beasts in unsightly “wetsuits” coming down, propelled by unusual fins on their feet!
Each month, they have journeyed to replant my lost relatives.
This is all very hopeful!
Perhaps you can convince your closest friends to substitute their traditional mooring to an eco-friendly mooring, like you. I am forever in your debt.
Sincerely,
Posidonia
