Enjoy a comfortable environment for kids and adults with a variety of sensory differences.

On Sensory-Friendly Sundays in Spring, our new exhibitions and activity areas will be open extra early and modified for a quieter experience to suit people on the autism spectrum and with a range of differing abilities.

Our trained staff and volunteers will be on hand to facilitate creative activities. Additional hygiene measures are in place to ensure families stay safe and enjoy creative activities together. Find out more about the museum’s Covid-safe practices.

8.30am
Play with archaeological dig sites, bubbles and more and create your own art works in Kids on Deck activity space (drop-in activities, open to 3pm).

Enjoy guided access with our friendly staff to the Sea Monsters exhibition (with exclusive access for SFS guests before 10.30am).

Sound and light levels in upper galleries have been modified to promote a more enjoyable experience up until 12.00pm today.

This is a relaxed event so guests are welcome to arrive at any time that suits their schedule. Guests are advised that the galleries will become busier and noisier towards 12pm onwards though so early morning visits will provide a more enjoyable experience.

10.00am – 12.00pm
Drop in on the Ocean Lab and enjoy water-based experiments facilitated by our ocean science volunteers.

10.30am
Main doors to the museum open. If you arrive after this time you can register with our staff at the main counter and collect a sensory friendly map.

Enjoy the exhibitions, the Sea Monsters and Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, take a trail or enjoy a chill out time in one of our quiet spaces.

11.00am – 12.00pm
Explore what lies beneath the surface of the harbour. Enjoy an Underwater Drone Challenge 15 minute session with our remotely operated vehicles. To secure a spot, book in at Kids On Deck (ages: 9 - adult)

12.00pm
Sensory friendly access ends.

Your ticket gives you all-day access to the museum and creative activities (activities are open to 3pm) so you are welcome to stay and play, but note that the galleries will be noisier and busier from this time.
