Who We Are / What We Carry

Who We Are / What We Carry is a new interactive project from the Australian National Maritime Museum exploring identity, belonging and the people, places and objects that shape contemporary Australia.
Through personal stories, digital interaction and collection objects, visitors reflect on their own experiences alongside the lives and journeys of others.
Two connected experiences
The project brings together two complementary works.
Who We Are invites visitors to build a composite portrait of identity through questions about what they think, see, say and feel.
What We Carry uses objects to reveal personal stories of memory, movement and home.
Who We Are
Who We Are moves visitors from observation to participation, creating portraits from fragments inspired by interviews with contemporary Australians. Completed portraits become part of a projected wall, showing difference while revealing shared values and connections.
What We Carry
What We Carry shifts the focus to objects that connect people to places, cultures, journeys and moments in time.
Social cohesion and belonging
Together, these works reflect the Museum’s commitment to social cohesion, using maritime stories to open conversations about belonging, national identity and common ground.
They recognise Australian identity as diverse and evolving, shaped by First Nations knowledge, migration, refuge and the many communities who make Australia home.
The project invites visitors to celebrate difference, discover connection and consider what binds contemporary Australia together.
This exhibition was developed with Sydney-based creative studio Junior Major.
