Hullo and welcome to the Ocean Photographer of the Year 2025

Presented by Oceanographic Magazine and Blancpain

The Ocean Photographer of the Year is a celebration of our beautiful blue planet, as well as a platform to highlight the many plights it is facing.

Photographers of all disciplines and experience levels were invited to submit their most impactful imagery to be considered by a panel of expert judges. Just 116 images were chosen this year from more than 15,000 submissions.

From breathtaking underwater images of unusual wildlife to stunning coastal and drone images, the full spectrum of ocean life is revealed. This is an extraordinary collection of photography created by extraordinary ocean photographers: divers, surfers and sailors uniting to dazzle the world.

The Australian National Maritime Museum is proud to partner with Oceanographic Magazine and Blancpain in creating this exhibition, recognising the vital role the ocean plays in all our lives – and the role our lives play in the future of the ocean.

This year the exhibition contains audio descriptions for each of the 10 category winners and six, wall-mounted 3d images you can explore through touch.

Touch panels are available for the following works; Overall Winner, Human Connection Winner, Young, Wildlife, Adventure and Portfolio

Audio described and touch opportunities are signposted by tactile floor panels throughout the exhibition. Scan the QR code on the wall with your phone in each location to listen. Should you have any hiccups locating a QR code, there is a friendly staff member at the exhibition entrance.

QR codes located at category winner’s, give instructions as to the whereabouts of each companion touch panel, if there is one.

At the touch panels and at category winners’, the image audio description is the same recording. We’ve doubled up, so you don’t miss out.

The winning image description is available from the ‘return’ wall, this is a term for a gallery wall that protrudes at 90 degrees into the space at the beginning of the exhibition.

Two category winning descriptions are located around the room’s periphery, four category winners descriptions are located on the centrally positioned walls. These walls will remain on your left as you navigate through the exhibition and three category winners are located at the rear of the exhibition, on either side of two, freestanding parallel walls.

Content warning: Some images depict animal cruelty and death. Visitors who wish to avoid this description should steer clear of the Conservation – Impact category winner.

Thank you and we hope you enjoy the exhibition.
