This morning we are travelling to North Head. The land of the Cannalgal or saltwater people, this was an important site for fishing, trade and ceremony and was one of the first points of contact with Europeans.

In 1832, North Head became the site of the Quarantine Station to isolate crew and passengers suspected of carrying infectious diseases from the city of Sydney. Remaining in operation for 150 years, much of the original infrastructure survives, including distinct forms of accommodation for first, second and steerage passengers and for crew members as well as hospital wards and dining halls. We will be taken on a guided tour followed by free time to explore the site before lunch is served on the Boiler House Terrace. Change rooms are available for those wanting to enjoy a swim in Sydney Harbour.

After lunch, shuttle buses are available to take us to the entrance, or stretch your legs with the uphill walk, including 234 stairs. From there, we will coach to Manly Wharf and take the iconic Sydney ferry to Cockatoo Island, changing at Circular Quay.

Wareamah, or Cockatoo Island, is on the UNESCO World Heritage list as one of Australia’s significant convict sites. In 1839, Europeans established a settlement here as a place of punishment for re-offending convicts. It later became one of the largest shipyards in the country, operating from 1857 to 1991. Many buildings relating to these two histories survive, including prison buildings, dry docks and workshops.

On arrival, we will be taken on an hour-long tour of the Island followed by an early buffet dinner which will be served between 1700 and 1900 at the Navy Store. Return ferries will depart Cockatoo Island at 1849, 1919, 1928, for the 30-minute journey to Circular Quay.
