Yirrikipayi the crocodile lives on the Tiwi Islands, near Darwin, and he’s hungry. But his hunt doesn’t go to plan.

Come and uncover his story, written by children from Milikapiti School, Melville Island.

In many First Nations communities, culture and tradition are passed down through song and storytelling, including knowledge about crocodiles.

DESCRIPTION OF DISPLAY:

This section of the exhibition features a large, semi-circular gazebo-like structure with seating inside, and earphones positioned between the seats. Several copies of the children’s picture book NO WAY YIRRIKIPAYI are placed on the seats. The outer shell of the structure has cut-out shapes evoking the animals Yirrikipayi meets while searching for food, along with other patterns like duckweed, water and Yirrikipayi’s teeth. Soft yellow dappled lighting is used overhead.

Children and adults are invited to enter this space, take a seat, grab a book, or listen to the story using one of the earphones located inside.
