Come to the Australian National Maritime Museum to discover how you can help to clean up the ocean.

In this program, your students will go on a ‘trash and treasure’ tour, solving riddles to find plastic trash and marine treasures. Along the way you’ll learn about sustainability, First Nations connection to Sea Country, the effects of plastic on food chains, and witness a Seabin in action! Your class will see how science and technology can be used to tackle waste management, and will leave knowing how to reduce their plastic footprint on the ocean.

Program structure

The program is divided into three parts:

  • An introduction in our education space. This will include story time or a video about plastic pollution and instructions on how to dispose of plastic waste.
  • A 'Trash and Treasure' tour through the museum. Students will collect plastic and wooden ocean animals along the way. A museum educator will discuss objects and exhibitions at various stations.
  • With their newly acquired knowledge, students will return to our education space and dispose of their collection and present a key message about their treasure to the class.


Booking information

Duration: 60-minute session for an Educator-led tour
Cost: $225 per group with a maximum of 15 students or $300 when booked together with Plankton superpowers and marine food webs.
Ratio: A supervisor/student ratio of 1:15 applies.
Teachers and supervising adults visit FREE of charge within the ratios specified in Plan Your School Visit.

Available: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

  • Duration and start/finish times: contingent upon student numbers and will be arranged and explained during booking.
  • Breaks: you're welcome to take recess or lunch at the museum before or after the program, but mid-program breaks must be arranged at time of booking.
  • Entry to exhibitions and vessels: all bookings include FREE entry to museum exhibitions and HMAS Vampire, time permitting. All other vessels require pre-booking. A supervisor/student ratio of 1:15 applies on HMAS Vampire.
