SEA KIN is the art-meets-science showcase of Seabirds to Seascapes,  an exciting 4-year program working to protect, rehabilitate and sustainably manage New South Wales’s marine ecosystems.

SEA KIN reimagines family to include the marine life of Sydney Harbour, our non human kin whose lives are deeply entwined with our own. The exhibition brings art, science and education together to foster empathy, curiosity and care for local marine ecosystems.

Created by artists Jennifer Turpin and Sophie Raymond in collaboration with students from Drummoyne and Glebe Public School, SEA KIN takes the form of larger than life photographic portraits of children embodying iconic harbour species. Framed in ornate seaweed and displayed in a salon style hang, each portrait is paired with an imaginative audio story, voiced by the children themselves and heard by lifting a shell to your ear at a listening station.

Through marine science explorations and creative workshops, students stepped into the perspectives of animals, plants and currents, blending research with storytelling to give voice to harbour dwellers such as seagrass, penguins, oysters, seals and the East Australian Current.

By inviting audiences to see the harbour through different eyes, gills and fronds, SEA KIN reframes marine restoration not only as environmental action, but as an act of shared care for our extended ocean family.

About Seabirds to Seascapes

Launched in August 2022, Seabirds to Seascapes brings together three different initiatives under one program. The three initiatives include Project Restore (Living Sea walls, Reef Pods, Seagrass and Kelp Restoration), The Great Big Little Penguin Count, and The Great Seal Reveal.

The New South Wales Environmental Trust generously funds Seabirds to Seascapes to help lead and deliver each initiative, with support from its project partners, including:

  • Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water
  • Sydney Institute of Marine Science
  • Taronga Conservation Society Australia
  • New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service

Generously funded by the NSW Environmental Trust in partnership with the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water as part of the Seabirds to Seascapes Program.
