You have entered a darkened room with a blueish glow. In front of you is a partition displaying the following text:

INTRODUCTION

Our relationship with crocodiles is . . . complicated.

They’re incredible animals – expert predators whose ancestors ate dinosaurs – and we’ve lived alongside them for thousands of years.

They fascinate and frighten us. We put them in our horror movies and our children’s picture books.

We worship them and wear them, fear them and farm them. 

We study them and showcase them, conserve them and cull them. 

You’d better come and meet them!

DESCRIPTION OF FIRST ROOM

As you move deeper into the room, by passing either side of the partition, you are immersed in a video-animation of an underwater environment displayed on several large curving screens - each 2.5 metres wide and 4 metres high. The video places you at the point of view from the bottom of a sandy riverbed, with clear blue water rippling high above making shadows on the pale sand. Gradually the screens display several crocodiles swimming through the depths. Some are small and appear in the distance, then vanish off-screen, coming and going. One large croc gets closer and closer, finally resting as though right in front of you on the bottom of the riverbed. It stares at you with its yellow eyes and shows jutting teeth in its huge head - almost a metre high and 2 metres long - before swimming away.

You can pass through the gaps between the video screens to progress to the next section of the exhibition.
