Flinders and Bungaree - What did they learn?

Australia appears on the world map

  • Matthew Flinders published a very accurate map of the Australian mainland. He didn’t make an accurate chart of the whole country himself. He stitched together the maps of the Dutch and English voyagers who had explored the coastline before him.
  • Bungaree became the first Australian to circumnavigate the continent. Flinders was the first European to achieve this honour.
  • Tasmania was proven to be an island, separated from the mainland by Bass Strait.
  • The Australian mainland was proven to be one continent.
