Spring into school holiday fun at the Maritime Museum

Oceans of fun awaits at the Maritime Museum these school holidays. Visit our new exhibitions, meet a hula- hooping giant seahorse, climb aboard an historic vessel, get arty with hands-on creative and ocean science workshops, and check out the view from atop a lighthouse, all at the museum of the sea.

 

Spring school holiday program highlights

Hands-on art and science for families

Kids on Deck - Underwater Wonders

Drop-in sessions run every 45 minutes daily, 10.30am – 4pm

Try some sea-themed art or a slimy science experiment inspired by ocean science exhibitions, One Ocean and Ocean Wonders. Create your own luminescent plankton sculptures, craft sea critter pom poms and learn to illustrate watercolour typography. Join in some slippery science or dress up as your favourite aquatic creature. Suitable for ages 4-12 years and carers.

Seahorse circus performance

Roving sessions 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm, Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays 25 September-9 October

Come face to face with a larger-than-life sparkly Sydney Seahorse and her seagrass meadow friend. Roving performances feature bubbles, hoops and juggling throughout the museum, imaginatively exploring our endangered local marine life and their habitats. All ages, free with museum entry.

 

Creative Workshops 8-14 years

Whale Song DJ - Digital music and animation workshop

One-day workshop, Wednesday/Thursday, 28/29 September 10am-4pm

Love music? Remix, reverb and record your own aquatic-inspired songs and videos in this digital music workshop. Get your hands on underwater audio-visual technology, including hydrophones and drones, to capture the world beneath the surface and learn how acoustic devices are used to track the health of our ocean life. Take your creative compositions to the next level with a digital animation and showcase your work on youtube! Earlybird rate available

 

Deep Sea Mystery – Film-making workshop

Two-day workshop, Wednesday - Thursday, 5 and 6 October 10am- 4pm

Inspired by our Ocean Wonders exhibition, delve into unexplored deep-sea regions and discover strange and spectacular creatures. Capture underwater footage and create your own imaginative film, inspired by deep-sea environments and animals. Learn film-making techniques such as green-screen, scripting, directing, acting and props and showcase your work on YouTube. All equipment provided, bookings essential.

 

Mini Mariners

Explore the galleries, sing and dance in interactive tours with costumed guides. Enjoy creative free play, craft, games and story time in our themed activity area. There’s a new theme every month. Selected Tuesdays and Saturdays in term time and holidays. Ages 2–5 and their carers.

Child $12/Adult $8, members free.

Booked playgroups welcome. Online bookings essential.

September theme is Alphabet Animals

Tuesdays 6, 13, 20, 27 and Saturday 10 September

Session 1: 10:30 - 11:15am, Session 2: 11:30am - 12:15pm

A is for anemone, Z is for Zebrafish. Take a journey through the alphabet of all things furry, feathered and finned as we spot amazing animals in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition. Get up close with creature specimen touch tours, movement, songs and games followed by craft, stories and free play in our themed activity space. Make your own tote bag, animal puppet or wild hat to take home.

October theme is Drip, Drop, Splash!

Tuesdays 4, 11, 18, 25 October, Saturdays 1, 8, October

Session 1: 10:30am - 11:15am, Session 2: 11:30am - 12:15pm

Swish, bubble, splash and dive into the wonderful world of water in a character-guided tour through the museum galleries. Discover stories about water and all the ways we use it every day. Sing songs, get messy with splashy play activities and make your own bubble painting to take home.

 

Sensory Friendly Sundays Access Program

Sunday 25 September, 23 October, 20 November 8.30 - 11.30am

A comfortable environment for kids and adults on the autism spectrum and visitors with a variety of access requirements. Join us for Sensory-Friendly Sundays in Spring for a quieter museum experience, visiting new exhibitions, selected vessels and activity areas extra early. Our trained staff and volunteers are on hand to facilitate creative activities.

Cost: $12 child/ adult. Children under 4 and members free. Pre- Booking encouraged.

Proud to Support the Sunflower

The museum supports the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower. Bring and wear your sunflower lanyard if you have one or pick one up for free on arrival to the museum.

Staff specially trained to support visitors with Hidden Disabilities will also be wearing a sunflower badge or sticker.
