Australian National Maritime Museum hosting award-winning Aboriginal dance troupe
The Australian National Maritime Museum is hosting a limited run of cultural performances by the award-winning Muggera Dance Troupe from 31 January until the 5th February.
The lively 30-minute interactive performance provides the opportunity to discover more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, cultural practices and customs. Combining contemporary and traditional dance with didgeridoo playing, the performance explores Australia’s First Peoples intrinsic connection to the land and sea.
Michael Harvey Australian National Maritime Museum Head Assistant Director, Public Engagement and Research, encourages visitors to come and learn firsthand the significance of these traditional practices, experience the traditional dance and try their hand at the didgeridoo.
“The Australian National Maritime Museum’s strategic priorities include sharing our Indigenous maritime history,” explains Harvey, “and draw upon this year’s exhibitions that will share both sides or viewpoints of our history as we reflect on 250 years since Captain James Cook and the HMB Endeavour charted the East Coast of Australia.”
“The Museum’s extensive 14-month Encounters 2020 program looks at this historic event and its lasting impact on modern Australia.”
