Learn about our rich naval heritage and history while soaking up the sea-breeze and enjoying spectacular views of our city. The museum’s Curator of Royal Australian Navy maritime archaeology, Dr James Hunter, will guide you throughout this historical tour – taking in the spectacular Chowder Bay, as well as Garden and Cockatoo Islands.
At Chowder Bay, we’ll view the remnants of past military occupation and the heritage buildings that still exist on the precinct. Garden Island’s the next stop, exploring colonial fortifications, the unique rock carvings left by those on-board the First Fleet and the Royal Australian Navy Heritage Centre. Our final stop will be the UNESCO World Heritage listed Cockatoo Island, where we’ll learn about its changing role from World War I to the Cold War, while touring its dry docks and naval buildings.

About the vessel - Regal II
For many years Regal II provided a much-loved public transport service on the Lane Cove River. Rosman ferries are a continuing part of Sydney Harbour heritage, having provided charter services for almost a century. In their distinctive red and yellow livery, Rosman vessels first carried passengers from Circular Quay to all parts of the Harbour in the early 1900s.

Dr James Hunter is the National Maritime Museum’s Curator of Royal Australian Navy Maritime Archaeology. He has worked in the field of maritime archaeology for nearly two decades, and during that time has participated in the investigation of shipwrecks and other archaeological sites ranging from prehistory to the modern era. James was a member of the archaeological team that investigated the American Civil War submarine H.L. Hunley, and a staff archaeologist with the U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command’s Underwater Archaeology Branch. |
