Empty rifle cartridges used in a 'smokey'

Sometimes research was lethal to the subject. These are underwater firearms called ‘smokey’, ‘bangstick’ or ‘powerhead’. Loaded with a rifle cartridge and attached to a hand spear, when fired at a shark, the force of the cartridge detonating would kill it. ‘Smokies’ are now prohibited weapons under the New South Wales Firearms Act 1996
