Since 1995, the Maritime Museums of Australia Project Support Scheme has provided over $2.61 million in support of over 565 projects across Australia.

The museum’s grants program is the Maritime Museums of Australia Project Support Scheme (MMAPSS). It offers funding to regional museums and organisations to help preserve or display objects of national and historical maritime significance.
Since 1995, the scheme has provided over $2.7 million in support of over 580 projects and more than 100 museological training opportunities to organisations across Australia.

Eden Local Aboriginal Land Council - $14,784
From bark to display: A Traditional Kuridja for the Keeping Place
This project will document the construction of a traditional Kuridja (bark canoe) by a senior Thaua Elder, preserving significant maritime knowledge from the Far South Coast of NSW. &nbsp;Construction will be professionally filmed, creating an interpretive resource which enhances public access to this rarely-seen practice. The completed canoe will become a central object in the refurbished Keeping Place at Jigamy, a cultural centre managed by the Eden Local Aboriginal Land Council.

Conserving Captain John Craig’s Sextant
This project will enable conservation of the sextant of Captain John Craig, on display since 1968 and an integral part of the story of Shoalhaven. John Craig was captain of Alexander Berry’s trading vessels, and the first Crookhaven pilot. Funding will support cleaning, component maintenance, preventive adhesives, mechanical corrosion removal, and treatment of its cedar box.

Preserving Queensland Maritime Museum artefacts and artworks
This project will support the purchase of materials and equipment for rehousing and storing artefacts and artworks in the Queensland Maritime Museum collection. Funding will allow 375 artworks to be returned to safe storage in our Artworks Room, and upgrade storage conditions in our Artefacts Rooms which contains 1,250 items. This project is based upon recommendations from a 2023 Preservation Needs Assessment, and will allow these collection items to be properly registered, housed, and preserved.

HMAS Gladstone maintenance
This project will deliver preventative maintenance to HMAS Gladstone, a decommissioned Fremantle Class naval patrol vessel dry docked at the mouth of Auckland Creek, Gladstone. Funding will support removal of accumulated rust, hull repairs, and application of protective coating to prevent further deterioration caused by exposure to a saltwater environment.

Narryna Heritage Museum - $5,267
Publishing Captain Haig’s journals
This project increases public access to transcribed copies of the journals of Captain Andrew Haig, a notable mariner and significant figure in Hobart's maritime history. Funding will support editing, formatting, and publishing of these texts in print and online. We envisage publishing the journals on the Narryna website and through Libraries Tasmania, and distributing them as a set of two bound volumes to maritime museums and libraries in Tasmania.

Conserving and photographing the Owen Stanley album
This project enables the conservation and photography of an album of artworks produced by Owen Stanley during his surveying voyages on HMS Britomart from 1837-43. The album contains watercolours, pencil drawings, and sketches of maritime activity in Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific region. Funding will support stabilisation of the album and re-insertion of detached artworks, as well as high-quality photographs with the aim of producing a facsimile for public access.
 Bass and Flinders Maritime Museum - $6,000 plus in-kind support
Mirage: Appearing on the horizon
This project will enable the display and interpretation of Mirage, a wooden boat built in Tasmania. Funding will support installation of Mirage on a midair cradle above an access ramp, where visitors can view the vessel from all angles. In-kind assistance will also be provided to assist with historical research regarding this vessel.

Great Southern Reef Gallery
This project will develop an updated display exploring the unique coastline of Portland and South-West Victoria, and raising awareness of the Bonney Upwelling. An audiovisual display will create an immersive experience for visitors to learn about the reef and waters of this region, along with objects and artworks from the Portland Maritime Museum collection, and written content created in conjunction with the Blue Whale Research Project.

The Captain John King Davis Grave Memorial Project
This project will install a memorial marker and informational plaques in Melbourne General Cemetery, at the unmarked and relatively unknown burial site of Captain John King Davis. Davis was an Antarctic mariner who voyaged with Ernest Shackleton and Douglas Mawson on significant expeditions, and was ship's master of the BANZARE voyage during which Australia's claim to the Australian Antarctic Territory was first declared.

Cape Bridgewater Field School shell midden
This project will create a display case for cultural material extracted from a shell midden at the Cape Bridgewater Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Field School. Discovery Bay Tourism Precinct: Albany’s Historic Whaling Station - $10,000
The last whaling ship: Reimagining Cheynes IV
This project will refresh interpretive signage and furnishings on board Cheynes IV, the last intact modern whaling ship in Australia. Cheynes IV is open to the public and a centrepiece of Albany's Historic Whaling Station, and this funding will support removing obsolete and intrusive onboard elements, and developing innovative displays and new ways to engage visitors. The vessel is undergoing urgent structural conservation works, and following completion of these works plus an interpretive refresh we plan to relaunch Cheynes IV at the 2026 Albany Heritage Festival.

Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands - $14,569
Pulu Cocos Museum historic vessel management
This project aims to stabilise historic vessels in the Pulu Cocos Museum collection, and create means for emergency evacuation should they become threatened by the increasing risk of coastal hazards such as erosion and inundation. Funding will support creating mobile support frames for the vessels, and upgraded lighting to meet conservation standards for UV emissions.

HMAS Perth (II) collection storage review
This project will review objects related to HMAS Perth (II), bringing their storage and registration in line with contemporary museum standards. Relevant objects from the collection will be identified, cleaned, rehoused, stored, and documented with a view to guiding future collections management and interpretive use.

Western Australian Fishers' Lost at Sea Memorial Association - $4,000
Digitising pioneering WA fishing family stories
This project will digitise and publish online hundreds of family stories regarding the history of the Western Australian commercial fishing industry. Following research and interviews, and collating and editing thousands of hours of stories, this funding will support upgrading the organisation's website to make these stories publicly available, and raise awareness of their significance.

2025 MMAPSS Recipients

Australian National Submarine Museum (in-kind support)&nbsp;
The Australian National Submarine Museum (ANSM) is presenting the significance of submarines in Australia’s past, present and future.
It is developing an easily accessible website that includes links to physical displays in Australia and around the world. The online presentation of the network shows the role of submarines in Australia’s story.
The pilot website <a href="https://www.ansmpilot.org.au">www.ansmpilot.org.au</a> came online in September 2020.
A more elaborate version of the website is being built now, whilethe network linking the physical submarine displays (e.g. Onslow at the Australian National Maritime Museum, Holbrook Submarine Museum, and Ovens at the WA Maritime Museum) is evolving.

Camperdown Cemetery Trust (partially funded) $8,440
Conservation of maritime graves in Camperdown Cemetery
The project carries out essential conservation works to the graves of four significant Australian maritime figures: John Leys, James Saunderson, Herbert A. Edwards and James Wood. Funding has been provided to be able to carry out preservation work and assessment on two of the four graves.

Eden Killer Whale Museum (in-kind support)
Vessel Management Plan for the historic timber fishing launch Maureen, constructed around 1937 by local boatbuilder and fisher Ike Warren.
In-kind support from the Australian National Maritime Museum gives the opportunity to inspect and assess the timber fishing launch Maureen and assist with preparation of a Vessel Management Plan (VMP) to drive future conservation, preservation, exhibition and interpretation.
Constructed around 1937 by Eden boatbuilder and fisher Ike Warren, the Maureen fished from Twofold Bay for much of her working life. The Eden Killer Whale Museum (EKWM) purchased her in 2021. Currently stored offsite, the museum is awaiting local council approval to erect a purpose built structure on site at the museum for her storage, exhibition, and interpretation.
The VMP will assist in preparing the Maureen’s nomination for inclusion on the Australian Register of Historic Vessels (ARHV); as well as supporting museum staff and volunteers in their efforts to secure her future conservation, ensuring that this irreplaceable artefact is appropriately maintained for current and future generations.

Sydney Maritime Museum Ltd. t/a Sydney Heritage Fleet (partially funded) $6,000
Replace Boomerang’s awnings.
The grant funding will provide weather protection for the 1903 Edwardian gentleman's yacht Boomerang and for its visitors and our guides. Awnings will be made by a contractor and installed by Sydney Heritage Fleet volunteers. The awnings are essential in keeping rain (freshwater) off the vessels decks and superstructure reducing rot and extending the life of brightwork and painted surfaces. Boomerang is open to SHF and ANMM visitors; its new berth increases the number of visitors considerably, and there is a need to ensure the vessel is well presented and interpreted.

Merimbula-Imlay Historical Society Inc (in-kind support)
Alma Gray Vessel Management Plan
In-kind support was granted to develop a Vessel Management Plan for the historic couta boat Alma Gray. This included an in-person visit by Australian National Maritime Museum personnel to provide administrative support and shipwright expertise, plus ongoing assistance to write and draft the document.

Port of Yamba Historical Society (partially funded) $5,000
Repositioning Billy Black’s skiff
In early preparation to upgrade the permanent exhibition for the 40th anniversary of Yamba Museum in 2025, the skiff was moved out of the museum and placed in storage in the shed. Given its significance as being built in Yamba as well as typical of the clinker built small wooden boats plying the Clarence River at the turn of the 20th century, members are keen to have the skiff reinstated inside the museum so that visitors, in particular school tour groups, can be informed about the importance of the river in everyday life more than 100 years ago, and boatbuilding technical skills.

This project will allow the creation of a website so the museum can disseminate information and locations to the public. Port Macquarie is an extremely popular tourist destination. It is also known that many of the recent new residents are unaware of our facilities. Making Waves: Stories of Australian Adventurers
Queensland Maritime Museum (QMM) will research, develop and present a permanent Australian sailing and rowing exhibition entitled Making Waves: Stories of Australian Adventurers. It will include:

<li>Tom Robinson, the youngest person to row the Pacific Ocean</li>
<li>Xavier Doerr, who sailed solo, nonstop and unassisted around Australia</li>
<li>Patrick Weinrauch and Paul McCarthy, who won second place in the Ward Evans Atlantic Rowing Challenge in 2001</li>
<li>Anne Lise Guy the first person to sail non-stop and unassisted from Australia to South Georgia</li>
<li>Michelle Lee, the first Australian woman to row solo across the Atlantic and any ocean, and who was Australian Geographic Adventurer of the Year in 2019; and</li>
<li>Lisa Blair the first woman to sail solo around Antarctica, and who set the record for its circumnavigation.</li>

National Trust of Australia (Queensland) Limited $15,000
Illuminating Cooktown’s Maritime History
Waymburr (Cooktown) and Waalmbal Birri (Endeavour River) boast a vibrant maritime history intertwined with Indigenous culture and the exploration era. From the Guugu Yimithirr people’s vital role to Lieutenant James Cook’s arrival in 1770, the region’s legacy is rich.
The Grassy Hill Lighthouse, erected in 1886, symbolises Cooktown’s emergence as a pivotal port, recognised on the Queensland Heritage Register for its architectural rarity.
To enhance visitor engagement with this beacon, the Cooktown Museum project will develop an interpretive display in the Maritime Gallery. Providing a unique interpretation using a prism from the original Grassy Hill Lighthouse, a replica lighthouse will offer a tactile experience. Activated by a sensor, an LED light within the prism will illuminate interpretive panels and photos, sharing the history and stories of maritime adventure.
By shedding light on the technical intricacies and human stories, the display will develop public understanding and appreciation of Cooktown's maritime heritage.

History Trust of South Australia (South Australian Maritime Museum) (partially funded) $8,000
Conserving Yelta
One of the most important objects in the collection of the SA Maritime Museum is the ST Yelta. In 2023 a consultant prepared a revised significance assessment for Yelta and paper outlining opportunities and strategy for the museum’s large vessels. Among the constraints identified in the reports were aging volunteers and an increasing scarcity of skills to operate Yelta.
The HTSA is committed to ensuring the conservation of Yelta in water at McLaren Wharf, where it will remain a focal point for visitors to Port Adelaide’s historic precinct. To achieve this aim, Yelta must be towed to a slipway and hull maintenance undertaken to ensure that the vessel will float for a further five years. The History Trust will use these funds to pay for a portion of the works required to achieve this aim. These works will be undertaken in the 2024 calendar year.

Experiencing Shipwrecks of the Tragic Shore
A recent acquisition of artefacts from the Tigress shipwreck presented the opportunity to depict shipwrecks in terms of social and socio-economic processes in colonial South Australia, and in colonial Australia more broadly. For example, Star of Greece transported an Armstrong gun in response to the fear of Russian invasion. Nashwauk and Manhow passengers included Irish women from workhouses and Chinese prospectors, respectively. The artefacts of Tigress represent the colonial consumer culture based on the importation of ‘civilisation‘ through things. Ida engaged in coastal trade that was important to distant parts of the colony
This project will:

Maritime Museum of Tasmania Inc $15,000
Rehousing the Maritime Photographic Collection
This project aims to rehouse the museum’s precious and much-used 19th- and early 20th-century photographic collections in industry-standard archival material for safe long-term storage.
A recent assessment made clear that despite the significance of the museum’s photographic collection, it remains inadequately housed in non-archival material and at risk of physical damage.
Through this project, the museum aims to not only preserve the collection but also ensure its accessibility for research and digitisation purposes without compromising its integrity. This will be achieved by storing the photographs in archival sleeves and binders, safeguarding them from potential damage and deterioration when used.

Glenelg Shire Council – Portland Maritime Museum $14,990
A First Nations Gallery in the Portland Maritime Museum, Nyamat Mirring
The development and design of a new exhibition within the Portland Maritime Museum dedicated to telling the stories, history and culture of the local Gunditjmara. Through a collaboration with the Traditional Owner Group, Gunditj Mirring, who will co-curate this exhibition, a range of stories will be told within the gallery space which celebrate Aboriginal connection to the sea and sea country. Alongside the exhibition, a Gunditjmara artist will be commissioned to create a mural which will serve as the entranceway to the museum.

Apostleship of the Sea, Stella Maris Seafarers’ Centre Inc (in-kind support)
Presentation &amp; Preservation
This grant has received in-kind support for an Australian National Maritime Museum curator to visit and collaborate with staff to assess the exhibition space and determine how to best utilise it to display three large scale Australian ship models recently acquired. Apostleship of the Sea can then work out how best to light, lay out, managed and allow access to these ship models.

This project involves the construction of an education sign describing to all visitors to the Sorrento region the history of the historic couta boats that are now homed in the waters of Port Phillip in the vicinity of the Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club.

Discovery Bay Tourism Precinct $7,564
Unlocking the Logbooks: Revealing the voyage and stories of the first steam powered whale chaser’s journey to Australia
The steamship Toern, made the voyage from Sandafjord in Norway to the Cheynes Beach Whaling Station in Albany, WA, in 1952. This project digitises the logbooks of the journey and subsequent day-to-day operational activities on board, making these historic maritime stories available for all.
After arriving in Albany, the logbook changed from Norwegian to English and the vessel was renamed the Cheynes. This project will digitally preserve these unique maritime documents and make them available on the Collections WA platform for interested community members, historians and researchers globally. The project will include an interpretive display in the museum with content sourced from the logbooks, including logbook images, stories of the ship’s journey and working life, a route map, photos from our archives, the scuttling of the ship and its current use, all providing a rich marine environment. The archival preservation of the books will also be upgraded.

Eden Killer Whale Museum Management Committee Incorporated &nbsp;$15,000
Installation of electric lift mechanism to suspend Orcinus Orca (killer whale) skeleton "Old Tom"
As the most famous of the Twofold Bay killer whales, "Old Tom" is an icon of Eden's unique shore based whaling history. Based on outcomes and recommendations of a 2022/23 "Hunters of the Sea" Exhibition Design Concept Plan, this grant will support the design, and installation of system for the suspended display of Old Tom's skeleton above the existing mezzanine well in the recently extended "Tom" Gallery of the Eden Killer Whale Museum.

Conservation of Dunbar and HMS Challenger Memorial
The first two projects are the second round of conservation works for both memorials. The first stage was recently completed and funded by a MMAPSS grant.

<li>Conservation of Dunbar memorial consecration stone. The trust has discovered the original memorial plaque in St. Stephen’s Church. The plaque will be re attached to the consecration stone.</li>
<li>Conserve the HMS Challenger Memorial. Historic photos show a stone finial in the shape of a cross once topped the memorial. The stone cross will be reinstated.</li>

<li>Conservation of John Ridley headstone (Dunbar victim). When the cemetery was walled in 1948, tombstones were stood around on the inside and fixed with steel pins and cement. Much damage has been caused by corroding pins. The works include core drilling out the pins in situ and patching the cracks. New (non-corrodible) stainless steel pins may need to be inserted.</li>

Pivot to a Maritime Focus - Concept Site Plan
This project is stage one of a programme which will implement a collections pivot from general local history to a focus on our maritime and coastal heritage. &nbsp; In line with the transition process, a Concept Site Plan will guide re-orienting accession and de-accession strategies and recommend interpretive opportunities, including capital works.
‍It is envisaged that relevant training in specialist areas such as lighting design for vessel artefacts will be requested from organisations such as the ANMM once the plan is in place. &nbsp;This grant will fund a consultant to prepare a concept plan for the site.

Iluka's &nbsp;River Training &nbsp;and &nbsp;Port Works &nbsp;Schemes 1862 - 1971
Iluka History Group would like to have printed a display recognising the work completed between 1862 to 1971 on the breakwaters of the Clarence River. The Clarence &nbsp;was a very busy river with many ships using it as a transport source for cargo to go up and down the &nbsp;river. Due to the dangerous nature of the river over many years walls were built to increase the safety of navigating the mighty Clarence. &nbsp;Training the river took many stages from Edward Moriarty's Training Scheme 1862 -1886, Coode's Training Scheme 1893-1903, 1914-1917, with others up until 1971. Our project will display maps, photos, engineers plans &nbsp;and information on the scheme. The display will be of a high quality with a long lifeline for display purposes. &nbsp;This grant is for the graphic design and supply of the printed display.

Display Panels - Metal
This project is to confirm the accuracy of our existing material and convert the printed format into aluminium display panels more suited to the marine environment. &nbsp;Due to this organisation’s position over the ocean and the condition of the Wharf Building which houses the museum, the paper materials deteriorate quickly. &nbsp;This grant is for the research and production of display panels for subjects of maritime significance.

Mid Murray Council (In-Kind Support)
Mid Murray Heritage and Maritime Committee - Museum Interpretive Plan document
The objective of this application is to review the entire planning and development process for both the Mannum Dock Discovery Centre and Morgan Landseer Museum, to develop a new and updated interpretive plan to guide future development now and into the future.
‍Both locations were a critical components of early river trade and commerce and the Mid Murray Heritage and Maritime Committee is determined to develop each to ensure that the heritage is preserved and presented for all to enjoy.
‍This will be a critical document to guide funding and provide clear direction for Local Government and the community moving forward.
‍The Mannum based facility was flood impacted during the recent River Murray Floods.
In-kind support is awarded for a museum expert to assist with the development of an interpretation plan.

May Queen Re-Caulking
May Queen is moored on public display in Constitution Dock, unprotected from the elements. Accordingly the vessel management plan requires ongoing maintenance and conservation repair to ensure the vessel's survival into the future. This project is designed to replace the caulking in the main deck, ensuring as watertight a deck as is possible to achieve without artificial or structural covering.

Bass Strait Maritime Centre &nbsp;$12,000
Our First Mariners
The Bass Strait Maritime Centre (BSMC) are seeking to redress a 50-year-old omission of Tasmanian Aboriginal Maritime History at BSMC, to tell the story of Tasmania's first mariners in the region known as Bass Strait. &nbsp;This project aims to do this by presenting a major new display at BSMC, in close consultation with local Aboriginal elders.

Glenelg Shire Council - Portland Maritime Discovery Centre $9,600
Portland Lifeboat and Admella Discovery Resource
This project will see the development of a suite of education resources highlighting the state heritage registered Portland Lifeboat and Admella shipwreck. &nbsp;Aimed at supporting teachers and those delivering education in a non-school setting, the resource will increase access to the story of the lifeboat and its use in the rescue of survivors of the Admella shipwreck. Objects in this collection such as photographs of the lifeboat crew, artefacts from the Admella and firsthand accounts of those involved in the rescue will bring the &nbsp;story to life. In collaboration with the National Maritime Museum UK this organisation will, for the first time, include digitally, Captain James Fawthrop's gold Admella medal. &nbsp;A digital exhibition complimented by activities supporting the Victorian Curriculum learning areas - arts, history, design technologies and civics will allow teachers and homeschoolers to access the collections online and then visit the museum to experience the lifeboat in real life. &nbsp;Funding will be used for a photographer and an interpretive consultant.

Preservation Needs Assessment
The Geelong Naval and Maritime Collection is of state and national significance. &nbsp;A Preservation Needs Assessment needs to be undertaken to identify the current physical condition of the collection items and the storage and housing facilities. The Geelong Maritime Museum was closed in 2017 with the closure of the Osborne House Complex. Many objects remain on display with some items outside of the building. The remaining have either been placed in archival safe boxes or improperly housed in large plastic tubs. The paper/photographic objects are stored in filing cabinets. The collection is housed in a heritage building with no climate control or HPA system installed. The report will make recommendations, including conservation treatment, improved collection housing, storage and digitisation. The report will be used for applying for funds which will enable the implementation of the recommendations outlined in the report.

The Lauritzen Commemorative Plaque, Seafarers Rest Park, Docklands, Victoria
The project is for a commemorative plaque to be laid in the newly developed "Seafarers Rest Park", Docklands, Victoria in memory of the Lauritzen Line polar ships and their seafarers. &nbsp;They were an integral support to the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) and its expeditioners together with the City of Melbourne, Yarra River North Wharf infrastructure over the period of 1953-1975.

Wahgunyah Progress Association Incorporated (In-kind Support)
Red Gum Boat Preservation &amp; Display
The Wahgunyah Progress Association Incorporated WPA) established the History Group in 2012 as a working body of the Association tasked with the collection, reception, collation and preservation of material relating to the history of Wahgunyah.
‍The WPA has been given a red gum boat which has been now listed on the Australian Register of Historic Vessels (Ref. HV 000509). &nbsp;This boat is presently in storage in a factory in a relatively stable atmosphere.
‍It is intended to construct a suitable environmentally controlled building at the Willows Reserve, Wahgunyah for the storage and display of the vessel.
In-kind support is awarded for a museum conservation expert to review the vessel management plan.

Shire of Cocos Keeling Islands $8,700 plus In-kind Support
Historic Jukong Restoration Project
This project aims to preserve the last working Jukongs. &nbsp;This will be achieved by supporting the local community to restore each of these five boats in turn.
‍In so doing, the knowledge and skills of the last two master boat builders on island (both in their senior years) will passed down so that future generations can keep this most vital part of the Cocos Island Maritime Cultural Heritage alive.
In addition to a grant, in-kind (non-cash) support will be made available for a Museum expert to visit the site for the purpose of assisting with establishing the significance of the collection and with documentation of each vessel. &nbsp;This support will provide conservation guidance for the restoration phase and a general plan for the ongoing preservation of the collection.

Whales from the Air: Aircraft Exhibition
Following on from the in-kind assistance provided by the 2022/2023 MMAPSS program, an ANMM Interactive Projects team Creative Producer visited the site and assisted in outlining exhibition concepts for the central whaling exhibition. From this visit, the whale spotter aircraft was identified as an asset to the interpretive capacity of the area.
‍Currently in storage, the whale spotter aircraft has not been accessible to visitors for upwards of 15 years. Due to its 12m wingspan, there are limited places within the museum that are large enough to display the aircraft. &nbsp;This project aims to utilise an existing gantry structure within the ‘Solubles Shed’ to hang the aircraft, constructing a ‘Whales from the Air’ permanent exhibition.
Funding is to display the aircraft with interpretive signage and interactive elements. This project will enable the museum to move forward with recommendations from previous MMAPSS support.

Submarine Institute of Australia Inc In-Kind Support
Australian National Submarine Museum
The Submarine Institute of Australia (SIA) is establishing an Australian National Submarine Museum, to build awareness of the historic and future significance of submarines in Australia. Stages include developing an accessible website, with links to physical displays in Australia and around the world. A pilot website is at <a href="http://www.ansmpilot.org.au">www.ansmpilot.org.au</a>
‍The next stages include development of the website and expanded network of submarine displays, to include Onslow at the Sea Museum, Holbrook Submarine Museum, and Ovens at the WA Maritime Museum.
This project received in-kind assistance from experts at the Australian National Maritime Museum to assist SIA with the ANSM Project.

Camperdown Cemetery Trust &nbsp;$15,000
Conservation of Dunbar and HMS Challenger Memorials
This project will repair and restore two maritime memorials. The unstable and leaning base stone of the Dunbar Memorial will be straightened and its draped urn stone top - which is currently sitting nearby in the cemetery - reinstated. Locating and reinstating the missing plaque is also part of this project. &nbsp;
Repairs will be carried out to preserve the integrity of inscriptions on the HMS Challenger Memorial. Weathered stone roll details at the top of the memorial will be indented and lead flashing installed to prevent water damage and further decay. Sections will be re-mortared at the base.

City of Canada Bay Heritage Society - Museum &nbsp;$1,100
Conservation - Late C19th Naval Reserve Jacket
This project seeks to conserve the late 19th Century Naval Reserve Jacket of former Concord resident Lieutenant-Commander Rupert Oswald Jones, OBE, RNR (Rd.) J.P., who was born in London 1881 and died Concord, NSW, 1959. He emigrated to Newcastle in 1908, and joined the Royal Navy Reserve. In WWI he managed the Port Suez Convoy Office, responsible for controlling shipping through the Suez Canal and port areas, and was awarded an OBE for excellent services. &nbsp;In 1930, he moved to Concord and joined the Royal Australian Naval Reserves, Rushcutters Bay.
Funding is awarded for conservation of the jacket and purchase of a mannequin-only display for the Museum.

Eden Killer Whale Museum Management Committee Incorporated &nbsp;$15,000
Conservation, rearticulation and relocation of Orcinus Orca (killer whale) skeleton "Old Tom".
As the most famous of the Twofold Bay killer whales, "Old Tom" is an icon of Eden's unique commercial whaling history. Based on recommendations in the Eden Killer Whale Museum Preservation Needs Assessment (Kim Morris, Art and Archival, 2018) and the Conservation Assessment of the Skeleton of the Killer Whale Old Tom (Robert Clendon, Australian Museum, 2019), a Natural Sciences conservator will be engaged to carry out conservation treatment on Old Tom’s skeleton, undertake any necessary rearticulation and relocate it to a new gallery space. The project will include a staff and volunteer training component.

Restoration and Framing of WWII Jolly Roger Flag
The restoration of the Jolly Roger flag of Royal Navy U-class submarine, HMS Unsparing, will &nbsp;include professional repair and conservation-based framing of this authentic WWII flag, so that it can be properly displayed and incorporated as a key piece in the Jolly Roger exhibition. The Jolly Roger will hold pride of place within the Museum, in a display that tells the story behind this rare submarine artifact, its historic importance and its meaning to those who served.

Lake Macquarie City Council &nbsp; $15,000
Nawayiba exhibition and education program
Rathmines Theatre, which houses Rathmines Heritage Centre, is also known as nawayiba (canoe place) in Awabakal. The Centre's 2023 exhibition Nawayiba will present Aboriginal maritime technologies, stories, and local Aboriginal archaeology, including bark canoe construction, scar trees, middens, and cultural food resources. The exhibition will involve Aboriginal community members who continue to fish and recreate in this place today, in continuing connection to country, community and culture.
Grant funding will enable canoe maker Luke Russell to be involved in the development of the exhibition. He will also act as educator, activate the exhibition and assist local schools with high Aboriginal student numbers to deliver curriculum linked outcomes.

Merimbula-Imlay Historical Society Inc $9,912
David Brown Punt
This project will support relocation of an historically significant and fragile punt, originally built as a salmon punt, and then brought to Merimbula and employed as an oyster punt. The project will involve construction of a steel cradle, loading the punt, transport to the Merimbula Old School Museum and installation on site.
Support from ANMM staff has also been made available for the development of a vessel management plan (VMP) for the punt.

Newcastle Museum $6,478
Victoria Lifeboat Conservation Project
The Victoria lifeboat performed a significant and dramatic role in local maritime history for her involvement in dozens of rescues from stricken vessels off the coast of Newcastle, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. ‍Assessment of Victoria has highlighted structural weakening and broken timbers to the bow section.
Funding will see the vessel stabilized, to prevent further deterioration. The broken timbers will be replaced, and a temporary support structure will be built. An independent conservation assessment of the vessel has been commissioned with International Conservation Services, which will guide Victoria’s future management and restoration, prior to its display at Newcastle Museum. &nbsp;

Newman Senior Technical College In-Kind Support
Securing the future of the historic fishing vessel XLCR
The project is to develop a vessel management plan, for 107-year-old historic wooden fishing vessel XLCR. The XLCR is a fine example of boat-builder Gus Green's craftmanship, in constructing purpose-built offshore fishing boats for Bill Padden who pioneered fishing techniques such as trapping, still used today.
‍The XLCR fished out of Port Macquarie for much of her working life and contributed prominently to the area’s history. One well-documented example from WWII saw the XLCR called out to rescue survivors of the sinking SS Wollongbar, hit by a Japanese submarine. ‍The XLCR continues as a fine working vessel, crewed by volunteers who give school students and community groups valuable experiences on the Hastings River.
In-kind (non-cash) support has been awarded for Australian National Maritime Museum Curatorial and/or Fleet team to conduct an inspection of the vessel and assist in the preparation of a vessel management plan (VMP).

Norah Head Lighthouse Reserve Land Manager Board $13,090
Printing of Norah Head Lighthouse Book
Funding is awarded for printing of the Norah Head Lighthouse Book, which is a detailed history of the Norah Head Lighthouse and Reserve region. The book also contains superbly-presented graphics of the building design, engineering and history of the Lighthouse construction.
The book is written and illustrated by Tony Jones - a long term volunteer and supporter of the Norah Head Lighthouse.

Richmond River Historical Society Inc. $5,476
Ships and boats on the Richmond River - a visual Compendium
Recent experience of catastrophic flooding has highlighted the need to store digital backups of these images in off-site, secure locations. More than 120 images of the many vessels that have plied the Richmond River that are held by the Society are presently only accessible to visitors in hard copy - mostly without supporting information. The project aims to share this rich collection and tell stories of the maritime links of the City of Lismore, via the Richmond River.
Images will be scanned, catalogued, and presented in digital display, with summary information on touch screens within the museum, adjacent to another display - previously funded by MMAPSS.

The Evans Head Living Museum &amp; Community Technology Centre Incorporated $15,000
Public Access to George Hunt Photographic Collection
The Evans Head Living Museum has completed high-definition digitisation of the George Hunt Maritime photographic collection, through the auspices of an ANMM grant (2022). The current project involves detailed research into the photographic collection, preparation of a high-quality book for publication with ISBN, and a related museum exhibition at which the book will be launched.
Part of the project will involve making selected images available to the public as part of a remote access program, through an updated MOSAIC program.

Mackay Regional Council In-Kind Support
Vessel Management Plan - Eleanor
This project is for a draft vessel management plan (VMP) for the Eleanor, located at Mackay Museum. Listed on the Australian Register of Historic Vessels in January 2022, the Eleanor played a significant role in the maritime and social history of Mackay in the early 20th century, particularly the city’s recovery following the devastating 1918 Cyclone. The VMP will support museum staff to seek funding for much-needed conservation work on the Eleanor, to address existing and further deterioration of the vessel, and ensure that this key artefact is preserved.
In-kind support is awarded for the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Curatorial and/or Fleet team to conduct an inspection of the vessel and assist in the preparation of a vessel management plan.

Queensland Maritime Museum Association $13,636
This project funding is for installation of new multilingual, QR-coded interpretative signage at Queensland Maritime Museum for some of its main exhibits - including pearl lugger Penguin, Ella's Pink Lady, US WWII submarine torpedo, heritage-listed Pump House and Lighthouse and Ship Models galleries.
‍The new multilingual, QR-coded signage will refresh existing exhibits and allow QMM to offer more accessible, informative displays to the public.

Mid Murray Council $8,000
PS Canally Interpretation
This project involves investigating the history of PS Canally and creating significant interpretive panels that will depict its local significance and role in the region’s river trade. The panels will be located both on board the vessel and within the Port of Morgan complex, to increase engagement with the vessel’s history and on-board cruising experience.
The PS Canally website will also be upgraded, to enhance the online interpretive display, ensuring this information is preserved and is more widely accessible.

Rebuild Independence Group (RIG) Incorporated &nbsp;$1,195
Fishing Pioneers of American River
The project aims to create a display at a recognised maritime precinct – the Rebuild Independence Group Shed at American River – in memory of the fishing pioneers of American River, on Kangaroo Island. ‍There has thus far been no recognition of the fishers, boat builders and local marine conservationists who built the fishing reputation and industry of American River, and who were responsible for the enormous influx of tourists who visit to fish here, from all over the world.
‍American River has a diverse maritime history and is regarded as a fishing paradise. Funding will be for a memorial, drawing on local memory and developed in consultation with the community, and will be in the existing maritime heritage precinct.

Maritime Museum of Tasmania $15,000
Repowering SV Westward
This project will provide and install a new power pack, including engine and gearbox, for SV Westward. The current configuration was installed in 1974. The gearbox recently failed completely and is beyond reconditioning. It is not practicable to fit a new gearbox to the existing engine. This funding will provide a total replacement of engine and gearbox.

Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village $7,100
Enhanced Stewardship of Collections Care
The project aims to improve the care and management of historical objects in the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum collection. The current collection store has reached capacity, which creates safety risks for individual objects, limits public access and does not meet museum standards and best practice.
The project will focus on providing new infrastructure and new collection furniture, which will expand capacity for adequate storage, collection care and quality access. This project aims to increase awareness and appreciation of the maritime heritage of the Southwest coast of Victoria for local, national, and international audiences.
Funding is awarded for the purchase of shelving and a storage cabinet.

Queenscliffe Maritime Museum Incorporated $12,551
Vessel Restoration Works for the Pilot Vessel Mavis III at Queenscliffe Maritime Museum
Setting out from Queenscliff, Victoria, pilots have guided vessels through the dangerous entrance between Port Phillip and Bass Strait since 1839. Today, two pilot services operate twenty-four-hour essential pilotage services to Victoria’s maritime industry from locations near where those first pilots launched their whaleboats.
In March 2020, the pilot vessel, Mavis III, was donated to Queenscliffe Maritime Museum. She served twenty-six years in 'the Rip' and exemplifies the shore-based launch service that began in 1979, ending the era of ships having to stop to transfer pilots. Following previous ANMM support, including a vessel-management plan and remediation works, this project seeks to continue restoration of this major exhibit in the collection.&nbsp;

Blacksmith Workshop: Part 1 – Concept Design
Following recent modernisation and upgrades of many areas within the museum in recent years, the Blacksmith Workshop is the focus of this project. Most of the collection’s historic artefacts are displayed in this building, however interpretation is not up to standard. This project will begin the process of addressing an upgrade, with a concept design that will aim to create a distinct chronological history of whaling in Australia and include modern interpretive displays.
‍In-kind assistance from the Australian National Maritime Museum’s (ANMM) Design and Curatorial team is awarded to develop this concept design.

(SIA). &nbsp;The purpose of the ANSM is to bring into the national conversation the significance of submarines in Australia's past, present, and future. &nbsp;It aspires to achieve this through an easily accessible website which includes links to relevant physical displays in Australia and around the World. &nbsp; It is the online presentation of a network of information that shows the role of submarines in Australia’s story. &nbsp;A pilot website has been completed, ansmpilot.org.au, and the next steps are to create a more elaborate version of the website and to create the network with the physical submarine displays around Australia and online connections with international displays. &nbsp;Funding is awarded to engage a consultant researcher to guide the ANSM Team to conduct for a desktop survey of relevant online collections relating to the service of Australians in submarines of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).

Lawrence Historical Society Inc. In-Kind Support
Assessment and preparation of a Vessel Management Report for the Restoration of the 1930's, Gladstone Skiff, 'Ulla Gundah'.
The project is to assess and prepare a vessel management plan for the Clarence River vessel, &nbsp;Gladstone Skiff, the ' Ulla Gundah'. The 'Ulla Gundah' has a significant history on the Clarence, from 1930's onwards. Lawrence man Gerald Commerford rowed the skiff in the late 1930's and early 1940's, winning many championships during this time. He trained on the Clarence, pacing himself with the river steamers. ( Gerald enlisted in the Army during WW2, and died in Borneo. In later years, the skiff was used for training by many students at Maclean High School. It is now owned by the Lawrence Historical Society, who wish to preserve the vessel &nbsp;and include in the Clarence River Maritime display at Lawrence Museum.
In-kind (non-cash) support is awarded for one of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Curatorial and / or Fleet team to conduct an inspection of the vessel and assist in the preparation of a vessel management plan (VMP). &nbsp;This assistance may need to be facilitated remotely if covid-19 restrictions continue to impact on travel approvals.

Norah Head Lighthouse Reserve Land Manager Board $7,273
Book - superbly detailed and presented history of the Norah Head Lighthouse, the workings of the lantern room and details of and the positions of all recorded shipwrecks on the coastline between Barrenjoey and Nobbys Head lighthouses.
Funding is awarded towards the production of the Norah Head Lighthouse Book, including an e-book, which is a detailed history of the Norah Head Lighthouse and Reserve region. The book also contains graphics of the building design, engineering and history of the construction. &nbsp;With particular focus on the engineering involved with the lantern room and "watch" mechanism used to drive the revolving lens, the methods of construction and the source of the raw materials used in the Lighthouse are detailed along with the history and positions of the recorded shipwrecks on the section of NSW coastline between Barrenjoey and Nobbys Head Lighthouses. The Norah Head Lighthouse and its surrounding reserve is an icon of the NSW Central Coast and over its 116 year existence has played a significant role in the protection of the NSW coastline and latterly as a tourist attraction. The book is written and illustrated by a long term volunteer and supporter of the Norah Head Lighthouse.

La Perouse Museum (Randwick City Council) $13,636
The Story of the Lapérouse Anchor at La Perouse Museum – a short film
The Lapérouse Anchor in the La Perouse Museum is one of the most significant, potentially iconic, and yet mysterious, objects in the permanent collection. recovered from the site of the shipwrecks of L’Astrolabe and La Boussole (the two ships of the Comte de Lapérouse's doomed expedition) off Vanikoro in the Solomon Islands, and eventually donated to the site of the French explorer's last known location where the La Perouse Museum is now located. The anchor provides a continuous link from Lapérouse Expedition's launch in August 1785 from Brest, France, to its arrival in Botany Bay in January 1788 and from the expedition's disappearance later that year to its discovery in 1828 and salvage in 1959.
This project aims to produce a short (10 – 15 minute) interpretation film that explores this object on many levels and with many contributors, to reveal to audiences its incredible significance and hidden stories. &nbsp;All aspects of the anchor’s significance will be covered, from newly discovered features of its history and provenance to its technological importance. The project will examine how the anchor is placed within Australia’s and France’s broader maritime history, its educational relevance to schools, the proposed conservation work on it, and also the forensic nature of museum research in the quest for authenticity.
The film will feature input from maritime history specialists, leading conservators, and representatives from the French community, and will be narrated by the Head, La Perouse Museum. The narrative and script will be adapted from the Lapérouse Anchor Report (2020) currently being developed by the La Perouse Museum.
Funding is awarded to engage an external filmmaker to collaboratively create this film for wider audiences on various platforms.

Cundletown and Lower Manning Historical Society (C&amp;LMHS) and Cundletown Museum $7,000
'Saving the Sunlight'
Much discussion between the executive, committee and members occurred about the proposed preservation of the milk/cream boat, ‘Sunlight’, and its value to the public. Being the last of its kind &nbsp;on the Manning River, it was concluded that the vessel, previously chugging along the Manning River and &nbsp;its tributaries collecting milk for the local area and beyond, was unique and &nbsp;a vital part of local history , and should be preserved for posterity. &nbsp;With Cundletown Museum having an emphasis on the preservation of past practises of the dairy Industry, the purchase of the boat by C&amp;LMHSandCM was negotiated, with agreement being reached, and the vessel relocated to the grounds of the museum. &nbsp;Following the award of in-kind support in the previous round of MMAPSS for the development of a Vessel Management Plan (VMP) another application was made for funding to start the work on the restoration. &nbsp;Funding is awarded to assist the Museum to perform conservation work on the vessel “Sunlight”, returning it to its original condition. &nbsp; All work to be undertaken will be overseen by a member of the Ryan family, who originally built the vessel, with a professional shipwright enagged as a consultant.

Lake Macquarie City Council Arts Culture and Tourism &nbsp;$13,636
9 Squadron at Rathmines exhibition and education resources
Lake Macquarie City Council owns and manages Rathmines Park. &nbsp;The park and its WWII era buildings form the state heritage listed former RAAF Rathmines flying boat base. Rathmines Theatre is the base's former Airmen's mess and recreation hall and contains Rathmines Heritage Centre. &nbsp;The Centre hosts two exhibitions annually which interpret the history of the site for schools, special interest groups, residents and other visitors. &nbsp;Rathmines Heritage Centre is a AMMC member. &nbsp;With this project the LMCC proposes an exhibition to be developed in 2021 and exhibited March - November 2022 at the Centre discussing 9 Squadron's time stationed at RAAF Rathmines, their involvement in WWII actions and the loss of HMAS Sydney. &nbsp;The exhibition will be accompanied by education resources and programming for schools. &nbsp;The exhibition and education resources will have an ongoing life on LMCC's Lake Mac History website. &nbsp;Funding is awarded for 2D exhibition design, education resources content development and engaging design for the free education resources pack.

Macleay River Historical Society $2,000
(Publication) Coasters of the Macleay Valley. &nbsp;The Days of Sail and Steam, 1836 - 1959
Funding is awarded towards the publication 'Coasters to the Macleay Valley' which will trace the period from 1836, the first settlement of the Macleay Valley to 1959, the end of coastal shipping to the Macleay River. It will focus on the vessels, their masters and crews, their passengers and the fate of the vessels.
The publication of this book will complement a previous Historical Society booklet, 'Riverboats of the Macleay' and a joint website project, 'Our Rivers, Our History' by Midcoast Museums. (<a href="http://www.oroh.com.au">http://www.oroh.com.au</a> ) The latter explores part of the maritime history of the Macleay Valley and the 'Coasters' will add to this history.
To date no specific account has been written on the shipping history of the Macleay Valley even though some books have been published on the North Coast Shipping. The publication will fill a void for teachers, students and the general public.

BSBLSC Textile Collection Conservation
The BSBLSC archive collection includes a range of textiles pertaining to the Club’s history as the world’s first surf lifesaving club. &nbsp;Central to this collection is a subset of objects of particular significance: 8 swimming and competition costumes dated from 1907-1960 (each with a different design). An embroidered BSBLSC representative cap owned by a Foundation Member (part of the team that won the first Australian Rescue &amp; Resuscitation championship 1914). Club competition representative blazer (1937). Ladies committee jacket (1940’s).Rubber surfoplane (1960’s) These objects are in poor but stable condition. The intent is to have these objects conserved and stored in appropriate housing to ensure they are preserved for generations to come, and publicly displayed in future. &nbsp;Funding is awarded to assist with the cost of the professional conservation intervention that is required to achieve this goal. &nbsp;These items are of broad appeal as an insight to fashions in swimwear and the importance of the beach to the Australian cultural identity. The collection is unique and of national significance given there is no other existing collection of these items which chronicle the evolution of swim apparel and surf craft at the worlds first surf lifesaving club.

George Hunt Photograph Collection: &nbsp;Digitisation, storage, museum exhibition(s), on-line public access
The Evans Head Living Museum (TEHLMI) has access to a high quality, black and white photographic collection taken by the late George Hunt from Northern NSW from the 1800's to the 1960's. &nbsp;The photographs cover shipping traffic on the Richmond River including many 'coastal' ships; tall ships and military (including USA warships possibly in Brisbane or Sydney), working boats (sugar cane, cream boats, ferries, tugs, passenger craft, etc.), Aboriginal people from the area, the village of Coraki, water hyacinth infestations, log rafts and pre WWII aircraft. TEHLMI have a goal to digitise and research the collection in conjunction with the ANMM's own collections, develop at least two exhibitions, and make some of the material available externally on-line through their collection management system. &nbsp;Funding and in-kind support is awarded towards this project.

Woodford Historical Society In-Kind Support
Woodford Flood Boat
This project aims to restore and display a historic boat which was used for rescues during the floods in the Stanley River Region in the late 19th and early 20th century. &nbsp;The boat is a clinker-built boat very similar to whaleboats used in the open oceans. It is about 5 m LOA (length overall) with an approximate beam of 1.6 m. &nbsp;Because it is so like a whaleboat and because of the renowned Sergeant King’s reported prowess with handling this type of boat in flood and rescue situations, the Woodford Historical Society believe this boat is the one that Sergeant King had built in Woodford in the late 19th century, more than a hundred years ago. &nbsp;The boat requires &nbsp;work to restore it to a condition suitable for display. &nbsp;As a first step towards this aim, In-kind (non-cash) support is awarded for one of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Curatorial and / or Fleet team to conduct an inspection of the vessel and assist in the preparation of a vessel management plan (VMP) with the additonal aim of preparing an nomination to register theboat on the Australian Register for Historic Vessels (ARHV). &nbsp;This assistance may need to be facilitated remotely if covid-19 restrictions continue to impact on travel approvals.

Rural City of Murray Bridge $13,636
The “Union” Restoration
The Rural City of Murray Bridge owns and bought the Union in 1995 for the volunteer group called the Murray Bridge River Boat Rail and Steam Group Inc. &nbsp;The Union was one of four vessels used as "Milk Boats" traversing the River Murray between Mannum and Wellington in South Australia from 1919 to the mid-1946. &nbsp;The small launches were used to collect milk and cream from the dairy farms on the lower Murray and a new style of river boatman evolved, piloting these fast and powerful boats in all weathers. In some cases the launches transported children to and from school. &nbsp;Following the award of in-kind support in the previous round of MMAPSS for the development of a Vessel Management Plan for the milk boat "Union", this project now seeks to progress restoriation of the vessel. &nbsp;The Murray River Boat Rail and Steam Group Inc., with the support of the Murray Bridge Council, will continue to maintain, display and interpret the milk boat Union representing its original construction and use as a milk boat on the Murray River. The Union will be restored to as near as possible to its original condition. &nbsp;It will be on display at the new Murray Bridge Wharf Precinct with the intention to have it surveyed and into working condition to travel and showcase its history. &nbsp;New interpretation signage and other forms of additional interpretation will be implemented where possible. &nbsp;Funding is awarded for the intial stages of restoration, for the expenses of caulking and oakum.

Cobdogla Steam Friends Society Inc. $3,500
Ps Roy Restoration Project
The long term aim of the ps Roy Restoration Project is to retore the vessel to a fully working, on water example of an early 1900’s professional fisherman’s paddlesteamer. The vessel was built in 1908 at Mildura, rebuilt at Euston in 1936, and rebuilt again at Gurra-Gurra in 1977. It was donated to the Cobdogla Steam Friends in 2003 and has been stored on dry land since then at the Cobdogla Steam &amp; Irrigation Museum. &nbsp;One of the smaller of the “mosquito” fleet of Murray Darling paddle steamers,the Roy is one of the remaining examples of a fishing steamer in community ownership. The opportunity exists to restore and operate the ps Roy as an example of an early 20th century fishing steamer. &nbsp; Funding is awarded to commence this project for the purchase of &nbsp;Red Gum and Oregon timber.

Audio Visual Display 2021
Funding is awarded towards the upgrade of the Musuem's Audio visual displays. The Port MacDonnell and District Maritime Museum have acquired footage of a dive over the two ship wrecks, the Admella &amp; the Corio, both laying on the bottom of the ocean only about 100 metres apart just off the coast near the Cape Banks Lighthouse. &nbsp;The Museum are also working on a new display of the migratory birds that nest along their coast line. &nbsp;Port MacDonnell also has the largest Rock Lobster fishing fleet in the Southern hemisphere the Museum is keen to share video of this industry with their visitors.

Conservation and presentation to museum display standards of plans and builders half model of 1903 Topsail Schooner ALMA DOEPEL
Topsail Schooner ALMA DOEPEL was built on the banks of the Bellinger River on the North Coast of NSW in 1903 by trader, boat builder and shipping entrepreneur Frederik Doepel using local timber. &nbsp;Although the ship's history is well documented, no plans for the building of the ship were found until 2019 when the great-great-grandson of Frederik Doepel, Paul Webb, discovered, while sorting through family papers for his grandmother, the original build plans and later versions, as well as a builders half model of the ship. Professionally conserved and presented, the plans and half model will be the centrepiece of the recently created Alma Doepel Museum in Docklands, Melbourne. &nbsp;Funding is awarded for the professional conservation of the original build plans of ALMA DOEPEL (circa 1900), a second set of plans created by Paul Webb's grandfather (circa 1950) and a third set from the 1980s prepared for the first refit of the ship after cease of active trading. &nbsp;The original plans will be framed for museum display and the other sets conserved and housed. &nbsp;The builders half model will be conserved and mounted for museum display in a display case/frame system.

Restoration, interpretive signage and an interactive panoramic overlay for the Gellibrand Pile Light
The Gellibrand Lighthouse stood at the head of Melbourne Channel from 1906, lying off Williamstown’s Point Gellibrand. On the foggy morning of 21 June 1976, the pile light was hit by the Melbourne Trader. The force of the collision snapped the piles at waterline. Due to safety reasons the structure was destroyed. &nbsp;Of all the iconic structures that Williamstown's History has produced, the Gellibrand Light must be the most cherished and best known. &nbsp;Not only by seafarers, for whom it had a special significance, but by the thousands of residents and tourists. In 2019 the Gellibrand Pile Light was gifted to Seaworks from the National Trust Victoria and returned to the people of Williamstown. &nbsp;Seaworks, with the assistance of Hobsons Bay City Council are about to commence restoration works including rust inhibiting, repainting, and reglazing the Lighthouse. To assisting in storytelling, funding is awarded for interpretive signage which incorporates an interactive panoramic overlay that will be activated by a QR code. The QR code will launch a webpage with an interactive 360 degree panoramic photograph of Port Phillip Bay. Within the panorama will be an overlay of a historic image depicting the Gellibrand Lighthouse in its original location. The user will be ableto interact with the panorama by moving their phone, creating an impression of the original scale and location of the Lighthouse. It will provide the user with a unique understanding of how the Lighthouse looked in its original surrounding. Interpretive text will also be made available to the user, helping to supplement the information available on the interpretive board.

The Aurora Australis Tank Test Model Restoration
The iconic Aurora Australis ship was the first ice breaking ship to be built in Australia and has only recently completed her final Charter with the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) and left Australian shores after 30 years of service.
It is the end of era for this remarkable ship which embarked on yearly missions to supply Australia's crucial research stations in the Antarctic, and has captivated visitors while docked in Hobart each winter.
Prior to construction, extensive tank testing was undertaken with a timber model of the vessel to ensure the Wärtsilä design could withstand the harsh conditions of the Southern Ocean and the ice of the Antarctic.
Offshore &amp; Specialist Ships Australia (OSSA) have acquired this important Tank Testing Model of the Aurora Australis, which has not been touched since 1989 and requires considerable conservation.
OSSA's vision is to conserve the model and make it available for display as part of a future maritime exhibition in Melbourne on the Ships &amp; Seafarers of Australian Antarctic exploration and science.
Funding is awarded for the specialist conservation works, transport of the model to and from the workshop, and construction of a display stand. &nbsp;Following restoration the model will be displayed at the Seaworks Foundation.

Port of Echuca Discovery Centre $4,860
Conservation and Repair of Archives in the collection
In 2019 the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre with MMAPSS grant funding engaged professional services to undertake a Preservation/ Needs Assessment (PNA) of the collection. The PNA identified many projects that the Discovery Centre would need to undertake. With subsequent MMAPSS funding the Discovery centre has been working through the assessment and completing projects with a high priority rating. Funding is awarded for the next step to clean and house original photographs in the collection and restore a selection of photos listed as high priority with a specific conservation treatment. &nbsp; This grant will enable the POEDC to enagage two conservators to visit onsite for two days to work with their volunteers on this project.

Lake Boga Flying Boat Museum &nbsp;$14,520
Lake Boga Flying Boat Museum collection significance assessment and interpretation framework
The aim of this project is to develop this community-run museum into a more modern and engaging space, one that effectively displays its collection to tell the unique stories of our history as a World War II flying boat repair depot. &nbsp;The Museum expects this project will provide the with themes for interpretation, a plan for interpreting their collection (with a focus on creating consistent and engaging interpretive signage), and a staged plan for implementation. &nbsp;Funding is awarded to engage museum professionals to undertake a collection significance assessment and to create an interpretation framework and action plan.

Albany's Historic Whaling Station &nbsp;$8,665
Solar Interpretive Audio Posts
The current project addresses the need to enhance the interpretative content of the site following the cessation of public guided tours at Albany's Historic Whaling Station (AHWS). Tours ceased following a business review and restructuring during the site's 100 day COVID-19 shutdown in 2020. The project includes an interactive component for visitors as well as the application of authentic stories and historical information obtained from the past whalers' oral histories.
The use of solar powered audio posts positioned in three key locations through the site will enable relevant and comprehensive content to be provided for visitors. Each post has two audio buttons for visitors to choose, and each button activates up to eight minutes of audio playback. The specific audio content to be included will ensure that vital information formerly conveyed by tour guide staff will once again be available to visitors. &nbsp;In addition, visitors will have access to a unique and dynamic narrative by utilising retired whalers' personal accounts conveyed directly by the past whalers' themselves. This authentic interpretative approach will continue to bring Albany's history to life within the unique industrial setting.

Museum of Fishing and the Sea, Packout Room Pop Up Museum - Design and Fit out
The Packout Room is a temporary museum to precede a permanent Museum of Fishing and the Sea (MOFAS). &nbsp;The Project will engage a leading signage, interpretation and exhibition design studio, to design the overall concept and interior lay out of the pop-up museum, and provide two curator kits to display interpretive text and images associated with key objects in our collections. &nbsp;These will convey five or six key storylines interpreting the histories of the cray (rock lobster) fishing industry and Port Denison and its maritime environs. &nbsp;Creative Spaces will also develop the designs for exterior signage of the Packout Room. The Packout Room is one space within the Geraldton Fishermen’s Co-operative (GFC) former live rock lobster handling facility on the Port Denison foreshore. &nbsp;The GFC is making the Room available for the pop-up museum use, and will make available half of the overall building available for a permanent museum as a standing sponsorship. &nbsp;The Packout Room is a ‘taster’ of the permanent MOFAS, with opportunities to test exhibition themes and engage audiences. &nbsp;Funding is awarded towards the creation of the two curator kits.

Central Coast Marine Discovery Centre (CCMDC) Maritime Heritage Permanent Display: Lord Ashley Shipwreck and Schwanberg's Siebe Gorman Dive Suit
The CCMDC possesses a range of artifacts, including; heritage shipbuilding tools, books and curves, plus relics from shipwrecks including portholes and other materials. The Central Coast had a significant ship building industry in the 19th and 20th centuries.
In-kind support is awarded for representative/s of the Australian National Maritime Museum to provide professional collection management database and / or Interpretation and Design advice and assistance with furthering this museum’s collection and interpretive displays.

Clyde River &amp; Batemans Bay Historical Society Inc. - $6,525
Delivering the Goods - Stages 1 and 2&nbsp;
This project develops a public program to make South Coast maritime heritage more accessible. It ensures primary source content is available worldwide through thematic analysis and dissemination via eHive, and establishes an innovative online ‘community’ of South Coast maritime heritage. &nbsp;The Clyde River &amp; Batemans Bay Historical Society's pivotal maritime focus commenced with Cook250, and continues through 2022, 200th anniversary of Johnston’s exploration of the Clyde, and subsequent maritime heritage.
This project builds on the (alternatively funded) conservation and digitisation of Illawarra Steam Navigation Company’s (ISNC) Nelligen shipping ledgers mid 1860-early1880s. By conducting a thematic analysis of the data, the Clyde River &amp; Batemans Bay Historical Society cultivate an in depth understanding of ISNC’s strategic role in the growth of coastal industries and commerce. Beginning with shared links to ISNC, the Clyde River &amp; Batemans Bay Historical Society will coordinate with museums from Nowra to Eden to establish a community of practice. &nbsp;Developed themes provide the foundation to enable other locally held collections to engage in allied research whilst synchronously building an eHive online gallery of South Coast maritime heritage.
MMAPSS funding is awarded for professional fees for a historian and IT consultancy. &nbsp;Additional research and extensive data entry is provided by the Clyde River &amp; Batemans Bay Historical Society's skilled volunteers.

Saving the Sunlight
In-kind (non-cash) support is offered for one of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s (ANMM) curatorial team to connect with this organisation to conduct an inspection of the vessel and assist in the preparation of a Vessel Management Plan (VMP) for the Sunlight. &nbsp;This vessel is the last of its kind left on the Manning River. &nbsp;The era of Cream/Milk boats passed many years ago with many now alive not even remembering them chugging up and down the Manning River and its tributaries collecting the milk or cream. &nbsp;This organisation’s long term plan is to undertake conservation work on the vessel “Sunlight” to bring it back to its original condition as much as possible so it is preserved for members of the public to view.

Jervis Bay Maritime Museum - $12,273
Re-float the KINGFISHER
KINGFISHER is a 9.23m wooden motor launch launched in 1946 by the Settree family, boat builders in Huskisson for three generations. KINGFISHER had a long period of operation in Jervis Bay and is well known in the region. This project follows the Vessel Management Plan developed by ANMM Curator - Historic Vessels, for preservation, restoration and reconstruction of KINGFISHER and will lead to the re-floating of this vessel. The work will be done by the team of trained volunteers who successfully restored the 109 years-old motor launch CREST, launched by the Shoalhaven Mayor in a public celebration in March 2020. The volunteer team is enthusiastic about applying their skills learnt on the CREST restoration to continue the work on KINGFISHER, which stopped in 2019 due to lack of money. MMAPSS funding will allow restoration work to continue. This project is part of a bigger JBMM plan to open its pond to become a living estuary from which the KINGFISHER and CREST can enter Currambene Creek. The JBMM will then be able to conduct traditional boat festivals and take visitors for trips on these two historic vessels.

Conservation of the Clarence River flood boat Cedar Queen
Conservation of the Clarence River flood boat Cedar Queen, currently on display at the Lawrence Museum, in Lawrence NSW. &nbsp;The flood boat has strong significance for the Clarence River district. &nbsp;Funding is awarded for Conservation and Interpretation work. &nbsp; Last year MMAPSS supported the development of a Vessel Conservation Plan and this plan will now guide this project work and any subsequent maintenance and display of the vessel.

Nelson Head Lighthouse and Rescue Station Reserve Trust &nbsp;- $5,400
Light Room Refurbishment
This project is for the restoration and refurbishment of the Inner Light Room to restore it to its original condition. The original Light Room was designed to provide lights for the safe entry of vessels into Port Stephens. The lights (red/white) were positioned in the Light Room to guide vessels through the hazardous entry into the port. The restoration plans to position new lights both inside and outside the Light Room and coloured glass in the windows to reflect the original conditions. A presentation will also showing visitors, particularly school groups, exactly how the lights operated.

A Preservation Needs Assessment of the Maritime Collection at the Port Macquarie Museum
Funding is awarded for a professional conservator to undertake a Preservation Needs Assessment which will assist the Museum to identify at risk or vulnerable Maritime items in the collection; prioritise conservation work, identify storage and exhibition needs, and develop a conservation program.
The expected outcomes of the project will include:

<li>A Preservation Needs Assessment which will establish the overall preservation needs of the Maritime collection as a whole and identify individual items which require preventive conservation or other conservation work and improved storage or display conditions. &nbsp;</li>
<li>An overall assessment of the museum’s existing storage areas, display areas and working spaces with reference to the Maritime collection &nbsp;</li>
<li>On the job training of volunteers in the process of preservation needs assessment by observing and working with the consultant during the assessment visit and an improved understanding of the importance of preservation and needs assessment in managing the collection. &nbsp;</li>
<li>Identification of ‘at risk’ objects in the collection and how these risks can be addressed or better managed both in the short and longer terms &nbsp;</li>
<li>Information on which to base a Collection Preservation Policy for the Museum</li>

Windows to the Reef
This project aims to conserve the only remaining fabric of the world’s first Underwater Observatory, formerly on Green Island off Cairns. &nbsp;In February 2020, the Observatory was removed from Green Island due to safety concerns. The 74 tonne solid steel structure was scrapped but 4 portholes – the windows to the reef – have been gifted to the Cairns Museum.
In-kind support is offered for one of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Conservation team to assist with assessing the viability of the project’s aims and to provide advice to guide the development of a conservation management plan for the portholes. &nbsp;

National Trust Australia Queensland - James Cook Museum - $12,924
James Cook Museum – Maritime Endeavour Gallery Refresh
As one of 14 internal spaces to be refreshed the Maritime Endeavour gallery brings together narratives on environment, contact between Bama and Europeans and challenges experienced by early mariners who visited Cooktown. &nbsp;At present the entire space is dedicated to the narrative of James Cook and HMB Endeavour. Realignment of museum display spaces will ensure visitors on entry encounter the First National Bama story first, and then subsequent galleries all of which will have dual Bama / European narratives. These have been developed and agreed to through extensive community consultation.
The Maritime Endeavour Gallery explores the stories that connect country to ocean and the cultural coming together of the two through different philosophies and traditions. Funding is awarded for: a commissioned art work and to design and produce interpretation displays; ‘Voyages and Trade’, ’48 days at Endeavour River’, ‘Local waters Ecology &amp; Science’ and ‘Endeavour’s Anchor and Cannon’.

Queensland Maritime Museum Association - $7,680
Queensland Maritime Museum Digital Transformation Project
Queensland Maritime Museum (QMM) is undertaking a major 3 stage digital transformation project to consolidate and photographically digitise its historically significant collection into a centralised collection management system. &nbsp;QMM's collection is currently documented across 150 separate Excel Spreadsheets, making digital access to collection information extremely difficult, time consuming and limited to volunteers and the public. &nbsp;QMM would greatly benefit from the consolidation of the Excel Sheets and Images into a centralised Collection Management System. This project is the first stage towards establishing this goal. Funding is awarded for consultancy and project management costs.

Rockhampton Art Gallery - $3,636
Maritime Self-guided Tour: Digital Access
In 2019/2020, through MMAPSS, Rockhampton Art Gallery developed a Maritime Interpretation Plan for Quay Street Cultural Precinct, Rockhampton. The Maritime Interpretation Plan identifies seven (7) key recommendations and this project seeks support to progress on several of those recommendations by way of 'A self-guided tour' that could begin at Customs House and take visitors to key locations from Quay Lane to Quay Street, such as the Bond Store and Stables, and to the Riverside and views of the former wharves area and the Fitzroy River (Tunuba).
In the development and delivery of a 'A self-guided tour' this project aims to utilise digital delivery of information to share Maritime content of soundscape and/or video presentation bringing to light collection materials held in the collections of the Rockhampton Library History Centre, Capricornia Collection at Central Queensland University Rockhampton Campus, and Rockhampton Art Gallery from key locations in the Quay Street Cultural Precinct.&nbsp; Funding is awarded for graphics and signage fabrication.&nbsp;

Kangaroo Island Pioneers Association Inc. - $3,200
Replacement of Interpretive Sign - Contemplation Seat Memorial Penneshaw, Kangaroo Island, South Australia
The Contemplation Seat site was developed as a place of reflection and a memorial to the Aboriginal women brought to Kangaroo Island by seamen in the early 19th century. &nbsp;It incorporates a handcrafted wooden seat at the top of a hill overlooking Hog Bay, Penneshaw and is approached via concrete steps etched with the names of these women. &nbsp;An interpretive sign details the contribution these women made to the early settlement of Kangaroo Island. &nbsp;The entire site requires upgrading which will be staged over several years as funding becomes available. &nbsp;MMAPSS funding is awarded for Stage 1, to replace the interpretive sign.

Mannum Dock Museum of River History - $10,000 and In-kind Support
Captain William Randell’s entrance welcome to the Mannum Dock Museum
The Mannum Dock Museum of River History exhibits a series of displays from Miocene era when the Murray River was an inland sea to Aboriginal occupation, birthplace of the Paddle Steamer and the commencement of River Trade. To entice visitors to take the museum journey a new entrance statement incorporating a “Pepper’s Ghost” effect featuring Captain William Randell – the builder of the first paddle steamer the Mary Ann on the Murray River; will welcome prospective patrons to explore the extensive, unique and interactive displays at the Mannum Dock Museum. This interactive technology will also be incorporated into the adjacent Aboriginal “river life” and river trade displays. &nbsp;Funding is awarded for design and final production elements of the project. &nbsp;

Preservation of the Falie Wheelhouse and Cabins
Falie is a 46-metre ketch that traded for many years in Australian waters, and purchased by Spencer's Gulf Transport Company in 1922, renamed, and used for coastal trading in South Australia. &nbsp;The vessel was commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy as HMAS Falie during World War II, serving first as an inspection vessel primarily patrolling the Port of Sydney, Australia, then as a stores ship. &nbsp;On the night of 31 May, she was acting as a watchdog outside Sydney Harbour when she struck a Japanese midget submarine trying to infiltrate the harbour. Returned to her owners in 1946, Falie was used to transport explosives around Australia before resuming the South Australian coastal trade to Kangaroo Island and carrying bulk gypsum from Stenhouse Bay from 1968. She retired in 1982, the last ketch to operate commercially in South Australian waters, and the last sail powered trading vessel in Australian waters. The timber wheelhouse, was an addition installed in 1938/39 on the Central Slip. &nbsp;Walter &amp; Morris provided the timber. &nbsp;In the mid to late 1950’s the two steel cabins, attached to the wheelhouse, were installed. Falie was then purchased by the Government of South Australia for preservation as a community and educational resource. &nbsp;The ship was restored to original for the state's sesquicentennial celebrations in 1986, with re-masting, new sails, and the fitting of accommodation and a galley. &nbsp;The Falie Wheelhouse and Cabins, were removed and the museum became the custodian. &nbsp;

Murray Bridge River Boat, Rail &amp; Steam Group Inc. - In-kind Support
Historic Milk Boat Restoration "Union"
The Rural City of Murray Bridge owns and bought the Union in 1995 for the volunteer group called the Murray Bridge River Boat Rail and Steam Group Inc. &nbsp; The Union was one of four vessels used as "Milk Boats" traversing the River Murray between Mannum and Wellington in South Australia from 1919 to the mid-1946. &nbsp;The small launches were used to collect milk and cream from the dairy farms on the lower Murray and a new style of river boatman evolved, piloting these fast and powerful boats in all weathers. In some cases the launches transported children to and from school. &nbsp;The long term plan for the vessel is for restoration for display in a prominent position under a shelter near to the Town Wharf and Railway Precinct with interpretive signage. &nbsp;

Bass Strait Maritime Centre - $6,364
Bass Strait: Above, Below, and In-Between
This project is for the development and display of a touring exhibition and educational program based around the social, natural, scientific, and family histories of the Bass Strait featuring eight institutions along the Bass Strait coast of Tasmania. The exhibition and educational program explores stories from each region and collection, bringing together staff and volunteers from each institution to develop the resources, write the exhibition and education program kit, and network in a way that has not occurred before between these institutions.
The first stage has been undertaken with support from the Arts Tasmania Roving Curator program with workshops on how to structure the development of the exhibition, touring, object crating, educational kits, and exhibition writing. The project is about to begin stage two – completion and editing of exhibition and educational writing and object crating. Stage three is graphic design, exhibition and resource printing, and developing the touring calendar. Stage four is touring the exhibition and educational kits, getting feedback, and further development of these as needed.
Funding is awarded for the continuation of development workshops, graphic design for the exhibition and educational kits, and the printing of the exhibition and associated construction of materials.

Maritime Museum of Tasmania - $8,600
Regional Digital Vessel Recording and Training Project
The key purpose of the project is to facilitate the recording and documenting of historic and significant vessels in Tasmania. Funding will support the development of a photogrammetry kit for free loan and provision of dedicated workshops and training to allow regional museums and historical societies to independently record vessels in their communities. Archive digitisation will be undertaken centrally by the Maritime Museum of Tasmania utilising the voluntary services of a professional naval architect using proprietary software.

Islamic Museum of Australia - $7,847 and In-kind Support&nbsp;
The Makassans’ story/ the perahu
The Australian Muslims History (AMH) gallery at the Islamic Museum of Australia was built to educate the community about the Muslims history in Australia and to exhibit the Muslims presence and contribution to the country. One of the earliest examples known is the connection between the fishermen from Makassar in Indonesia and the northern shores of Australia.
The project aims to tell the story of the Muslim fishermen from Makassar from Indonesia and their connection with the Indigenous communities in the northern and the north western shores of Australia from the early 1700s. The Project will take place in one corner of the Australia Muslims History (AMH) gallery and will include display and exhibit of the perahu model of the vessel which was used by the Makassans in their journey to the Australia land.
Funding is awarded towards several elements of this project including, design, graphic art, installation and a showcase for the perahu model. &nbsp;In-kind (non-cash) support is also offered for one of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s (ANMM) Interpretation and Design team to assist by investigating if there is an appropriate ex-ANMM showcase and / or an AV Interactive Screen which can be delivered to this organisation. &nbsp;

Mallacoota and District Historical Society Inc. (Bunker museum) - $2,500 &amp; In-kind Support&nbsp;
SS Riverina lifeboat&nbsp;
The wreck of the SS Riverina near Mallacoota in 1927 and rescue of all passengers and crew via Mallacoota has legendary status in Gippsland. The Bunker Museum has a collection of Riverina artefacts, principally a sideboard from the salon and a lifeboat which had been converted to a cabin cruiser on the Gippsland Lakes. The boat was well known on the lakes for over 70 years before being donated to the Bunker Museum in 2012. &nbsp;Wooden lifeboats were phased out in the late 1920s in favour of steel lifeboats.&nbsp; Original examples of wooden lifeboats from the Riverina’s era, 1905-1927, are rare. The Shetland Museum (UK) in 2016 restored a life boat from the SS Oceanic (1899-1914). The National Maritime Museum (UK) in 2018 built a replica of a lifeboat from the Titanic (1911-1912).
MMAPSS in-kind support is awarded for one of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s (ANMM) curatorial team to assist with an inspection of the vessel and the preparation of a Vessel Management Plan (VMP) for the SS Riverina lifeboat. &nbsp;This VMP will provide sound documentation and planning toward ensuring the viability of both the restoration program and the vessel once restored. &nbsp;Funding is also awarded for a diorama to better present the life boat in as near as possible to its original form, as an example of the craft of wooden life boats carried by ships of the era, representing the role and values of the township of Mallacoota and the region in saving lives at sea.

Mission to Seafarers Victoria - $5,000
Ship to Shore: The Colonial Gaze in Port Phillip
This project will work with RMIT early career artists in a multidisciplinary research program, linking theory and practice, and will result in a unique body of photographic works that will engage audiences, and deliver a post-modern interpretation of European visual encounters with local maritime environments, through exploration and mapping (1798-1850). &nbsp;
Funding is awarded for several elements of this project: to produce 30 large photographic artworks on metal, and for exhibition design and installation for public exhibition. This project is designed to create new audiences of maritime histories and create a platform for community collaboration across maritime culture, the arts, heritage and academia.
The resultant artistic content and research produced will be channelled into travelling exhibitions, education workshops, forums and talks across several cultural institutions and RMIT University. &nbsp;Works will be held by the Mission to Seafarers Victoria and potentially other relevant cultural organisations.

All hands on deck – The Polly Woodside shares her stories (Research, interpretation and digital online public program information for the Polly Woodside tall ship)&nbsp;
An internationally significant three masted barque, the Polly Woodside is a key story in Melbourne’s maritime history, a commanding object in situ at Duke and Orr’s dock and testament to the vision and passion of maritime enthusiasts and volunteers. &nbsp;It is of historical, scientific (technological) and social significance to the State of Victoria. &nbsp;As a popular tourist destination, icon for the community, and educational site for school children, the ship and its associated stories provide rich and intriguing information about the past.
This project is designed to discover, share and celebrate the hidden stories of the many communities involved with the Polly Woodside from its early sailing days to its most recent journey. Team work, collegiality, inclusion, support and shared experiences are hallmarks of Polly Woodside’s rich history. These new stories will broaden and enhance public understanding and interest in the Polly Woodside and provide a vehicle for increasing contemporary public engagement with the past and future of maritime history. &nbsp; Funding is awarded for one element of the planned project activities – for a researcher / writer to research and develop new and refreshed stories.

Port of Echuca Discovery Centre - $3,532
'Caring for the Collection' - A Preservation workshop at the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre
In 2019 the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre, with the support of a MMAPSS grant, engaged a professional to undertake a Preservation / Needs Assessment of the existing collection. &nbsp;A previous assessment had been undertaken in 2007, however since that time much had changed, including the building of the Discovery Centre in 2014. &nbsp;One of the aims of the assessment was to view each storage and display area and determine their suitability as repositories for the paper based collection, which includes photographs, materials, documents and books. &nbsp;The Preservation / Needs assessment identified many projects that the Discovery Centre will need to undertake, however a High Priority rating was given to conducting a workshop for staff and volunteers to assist with the preservation of the collection.

Queenscliffe Maritime Museum Inc. - In-kind Support&nbsp;
Pilot Vessel 'Mavis III' and the Evolution in Technology and Design of the Pilot Vessels at Queenscliff and Port Phillip from the 1970s to 2020.
Setting off from Queenscliff, Victoria, pilots have guided vessels through the dangerous entrance between Port Phillip and Bass Strait since 1839 when George Tobin was granted the first pilot licence for the Port Phillip District of New South Wales. Today, the Port Phillip Sea Pilots (PPSP) operate a twenty-four hour essential pilotage service to Victoria’s maritime industry from the same location as those first pilots launched their whaleboats. &nbsp;In March, 2020, their pilot vessel, 'Mavis III', was donated to Queenscliffe Maritime Museum. &nbsp;She served twenty-six years in 'the Rip' and exemplifies the shore- based launch service that began in 1979, ending the era of ships having to stop to transfer pilots.

Albany’s Historic Whaling Station - $4,500
The Art of Scrimshaw: A whaler’s pastime.
This project follows on from the 2019-2020 MMAPSS project: “Whaler’s Tales: Oral Histories of Albany’s Past Whaling Community”, using content from one of the interviewees, Gary Tonkin. Tonkin’s life as a Meat Inspector at the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company (CBWC) was followed by his transition to a world renowned scrimshaw artist.
The current project will use artefacts from Albany’s Historic Whaling Station’s (AHWS) existing scrimshaw collection to showcase the maritime significance of scrimshaw craft, with the support of Tonkin’s in-depth scrimshaw knowledge.
AHWS’ scrimshaw collection is currently housed in the Gift Shop Gallery adjacent to the whaling museum. The display has no interpretation and the artefacts are all located in one display case. &nbsp;AHWS aims to enrich this scrimshaw exhibition and to enhance engagement with the addition of interpretive panels and visual presentations, aligning it with both industry standards and those currently onsite. &nbsp;This will also provide the foundations for future expansion of Tonkin’s scrimshaw art pieces.

Irwin Districts Historical Society $3,600
Pullin’ the Pots Oral History program.
“Pullin’ the Pots - A History of the Port Denison Fisheries and their Environs on Western Australia’s Abrolhos Coast” is an overarching project focused on the histories of activities central to the local ‘cray culture’ in Port Denison, such as the customs and traditional practices of fishers and fishing communities, boat building and maintenance, changing marine environments, and the cultural extent of the historical and contemporary fisheries. &nbsp;
The Pullin’ the Pots Oral History program, within the larger project, will conduct interviews with twelve people who have been engaged in the cray fishing industry out of Port Denison since the late 1950s/early 1960s. &nbsp;It will include both fishers who ventured out to sea as well as fisher-partners who stayed ashore. &nbsp;
Funding has been awarded for one element of this project; the transcriptions of the interviews.

Aboriginal Watercraft Conservation Project - Phase One: Assessment
The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) houses a select collection of significant Aboriginal watercraft; three of these require assessment, conservation and treatment. These particular vessels are significant for their representation of three different types of Aboriginal watercraft used historically in northern Australia.
In-kind support is offered toward this project for contacts from the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Curatorial and Indigenous teams to collaborate with MAGNT and the watercraft’s Traditional Owners on a session that fosters the sharing of knowledge.

Acquisition of 4 x Showcase units to house Darwin Military Museum Naval &amp; Maritime Collection
The Darwin Military Museum has acquired a growing and valuable Naval &amp; Maritime collection of artefacts in recent years. This project sought to acquire 4 x 'showcase' glass display cabinets to suitably house and display this collection in a dedicated space. The cabinets need to be lockable and provide a secure environment for these items as well as making them accessible to visitors. By displaying these items together in a space dedicated to the Naval &amp; Maritime collection, this project aims to much improve the understanding and context of the artefacts.

Age of Fishes Museum $2,490
Five Fossil Stands for the Age of Fishes Museum at Canowindra.
The Age of Fishes Museum contains 360 million year old internationally significant fossils. It has a Visitor Information Centre and is a hub for information, education and scientific research. More than 10,000 people visit the Museum each year from universities, schools, and clubs clubs throughout Australia. The Museum has 200 sandstone slabs (80 tonnes) and currently only twelve upright display stands. The stands make the fossils more accessible to visitors, improve the professionalism of the displays and promote tourism. The Age of Fishes Museum brings many visitors to the Central Western Region. The construction of stands will also promote employment and engineering businesses in our local region. The frames must be of heavy duty steel to take the weight of the Fossils which can weigh up to a tonne. Funding is awarded to build one stand.

LIGHT CRAFT IN A HEAVY SEA - The story of the PV Richmond and its life and times on the Richmond River at Ballina
This project aims to tell the story of the PV Richmond and its service to the Port of Ballina. As the Pilot vessel for the port of Ballina this vessel and those who crewed her played a major part in the Ballina's rich maritime history.She served on the river ( Port of Ballina) from 1932 till 1981 engaged in piloting duties, bar sounding and at times marine rescue. Her story is within living memory for some Ballina residents but as never been fully explored or told to the community. In 1982 she was formally presented to the people of Ballina by the the NSW Maritime Services Board and is now located at the front entrance to the Ballina Naval &amp; Maritime Museum. In a 2012 report by RPS Group the vessel was Identified as being of "considerable technical and aesthetic significance for its inherent character and considered to to be of high research value. In that she provides an important insight into the those who lived, worked, and protected our seas". She provides a tangible link between the NSW Pilotage Service and the town of Ballina. Funding is awarded for interpretation and in-kind support is also awarded for one of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Curatorial team to conduct an inspection of the vessel and assist in the preparation of a vessel management plan (VMP).

Funding is awarded to engage a specialist cetacean conservator to undertake a detailed condition assessment of the orca (killer whale) skeleton known as ‘Old Tom’, with a view to identifying any urgent and future preservation needs for the long-term display of the skeleton which remains an icon of Eden’s unique whaling history.

Botanists’ Walk: A project of the Friends of the North Coast Regional Botanic Garden, Coffs Harbour in honour of the 250th Anniversary of Cook’s Voyage
The Coffs Harbour botanic gardens would like to honour the occasion of the 250 anniversary voyage around Australia of the replica Endeavour and its planned short visit to Coffs Harbour by creating a venue for school children and community to come together to learn more about the original voyage. This project aims to show three things: first how the peoples seen by Cook and his crew, and recorded in diaries, collected and used in their daily lives the plants collected so carefully by the botanists. Second, how these botanists collected, stored, recorded and eventually took back to Europe nearly 30,000 samples of local flora, and finally, the importance of this trip in our knowledge of plant taxonomy. This is the first stage of the NCRBG’s longer project to honour many of the men and women who have contributed to our knowledge of the flora of the mid-north coast.

Restoring the 'Cedar Queen', Clarence River Flood Boat
This museum are working towards a project to restore the 7.5m red cedar century old flood boat the 'Cedar Queen'. Flood boats were a part of life on the Clarence River from the late 1800's to around the 1970's, when they were replaced by aluminium boats with outboard motors. As well as being used for transport on the river and during floods, Clarence Valley dwellers held annual regattas at Grafton racing their flood boats and butcher boats.This boat has full length planks and was built from one tree, reputedly from the head of the Clarence River. It was donated to the Lawrence Museum by the Oxenbridge family, who found it lying unused, outside the Scout Hall at Cochran Park. The heritage listed boat has been on display at Lawrence Museum in recent years, without restoration. Lawrence Museum is now constructing a new display area, and the ‘Cedar Queen’ is an important part of local river history and will be a main feature. In-kind support is awarded for one of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Curatorial team to conduct an inspection of the vessel and assist in the preparation of a vessel management plan (VMP).

Lismore Rainforest Botanic Gardens Inc $10,900

Educational tools, native flora identification wheels, will be designed and printed for use by school students during tours of the Lismore Rainforest Botanic Gardens and the Arakwal National Park. All plants will be those collected by Joseph Banks during his first voyage on the Endeavour. A small garden, featuring the wheels on the plants, will be planted and maintained at the Lismore Rainforest Botanic Gardens as a living collection.

Manning Valley Historical Society Inc. $1,285
Showcasing Boat Building and Shipping on the Manning River
The Manning Valley has a remarkable maritime history that was crucial to river and coastal trade in the early years of NSW. It has had a continuous boat building industry from 1834 and for a long period in the nineteenth century, shipping on the Manning was the dominant form of transport. Wingham Museum acknowledges this history with its modest, but significant collection of maritime artefacts, photographs and research material that align with the museum’s key themes of “the struggle against isolation” and “the ingenuity of the people of the Manning Valley”. This project proposes to improve the presentation of the “Shipping on the Manning” theme by providing better public access. A kiosk style, information point will be placed at their Manning River display to provide access to photographs and other audio-visual material, which is not currently available to the public. The presentation of this material will allow visitors to investigate the museum’s maritime collection to their level of satisfaction and come away with a better understanding of the significance of the Manning’s maritime history.

The research aims to develop interpretation concepts and strategies for the new Quay Street Cultural Precinct in Rockhampton, bringing together the sites of Customs House, Bonds Store, Horse Stables and the New Rockhampton Art Gallery with an overlay of maritime history and activities focused upon post Europeans settlement to the region. Funding is awarded for the engagement of a cultural and museums services specialist to consider site and place to establish a post-European settlement narrative of Rockhampton’s maritime history, inclusive of indigenous engagement.

Presentation and Interpretation of the relics from the South Australian Government cutter Water Witch
The Water Witch was the South Australian Government supply vessel that was used to carry out surveys along the coastline and also to support early expeditions in particular that of Edward John Eyre when he explored from South Australia to King George Sound, Western Australia. In 1841 it sailed through the mouth of the River Murray and later, on to Moorundie where it sank in December 1842. In 1986 the Government commissioned a survey to locate the wreck and a number of artefacts were salvaged. The Goolwa History Centre has some of the larger items that were loaned many years ago and the remainder of the items are now available for display. The original exhibit is in need of refurbishing and expanding to accommodate the extra items which will allow for better interpretation of the story. Funding is awarded to prepare story boards and in-kind support is also offered for one of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s (ANMM) Interpretation and Design team to assist by investigating if there is an appropriate ex-ANMM showcase/s which can be delivered to the organisation.

Preservation of the ST Tancred Wheelhouse
Tancred (BAT-13) was laid down on 3 September 1942 at Port Arthur, Tex., by the Gulfport Boiler and Welding Works; launched on 1 January 1943; and delivered to the United Kingdom under lend-lease on 18 February 1943.Tancred, given the pennant number of W-104 in the Royal Navy, departed Port Arthur, Tex., on 8 March for service in the North Atlantic. After six months under the White Ensign, the tug was transferred to Australia on 2 September 1944, and served "down under" until beginning a career with the Australian Salvage Board in 1949, Tancred subsequently served under the aegis of the Department of Marine and Harbours, South Australia.The Tancred was used to assist liners berthing at Outer Harbour as intended until the arrival of the Tusker in 1958, and was utilised extensively by the Harbors Board then the Department of Marine and Harbors in tows of their own plant, taking many dredgers, barges and pontoons between Port Adelaide and Port Lincoln, Port Pirie, Whyalla, Wallaroo, Port Giles and Ardrossan. Tancred was cut up for scrap in 1988 but the Wheelhouse section was retained and is on display at the Port Adelaide Historical Society Museum. Funding is awarded for work to preserve the wheelhouse.

The Duchess, Pamela and the Captain
This exhibition will showcase photographs documenting life on the windjammer Herzogin Cecile taken by British journalist Pamela Bourne in the 1930s. The South Australian Maritime Museum's (SAMM) goal is to link communities across one of the longest shipping routes in the world through this extraordinary collection from rural Victoria that encapsulates a global story. SAMM will work with small museums in Finland and South Australia to produce an exhibition based around this collection. SAMM plan to digitize the entire Bourne collection so it can be used in other ways and made accessible to a broader audience. Funding is awarded for design and film production.&nbsp;

Maritime History of Dover and the Far South of Tasmania digitisation and conversion to display banners
This project is for the digitisation and conversion of local maritime history displays, presently presented on foamboard, to more modern museum-style banners. The previous displays consist of photographs, newspaper articles and stories of Dover and the Far South of Tasmania's maritime history. These boards have aged and deteriorated and the information is planned to be digitised and reproduced onto banners for display.
In- kind support is also awarded for a representative from the Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM) to provide professional interpretation and design advice and assistance with furthering the museum’s interpretive displays.

Preparation of a Vessel Management Plan for the yacht Westward
The yacht, Westward, is one of this museum's most significant collection items. Westward is on the Australian Register of Historic Vessels. She was built in Battery Point, Hobart in 1947 by renowned Tasmanian boat builder, Jock Muir, and won (on handicap), the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races of 1947 and 1948.
Since many of the initial group who maintained the sailed Westward are now unable to do so the Museum realised that the vessel should be better documented and that a workable conservation and management plan was required to help to guide future work on the vessel and also its use. As a start to this project a Significance Study of the vessel was prepared in 2018. This musuem's next step is to prepare a vessel conservation and management plan which would provide a very valuable blueprint for future management and work on the vessel.

Whales: Beneath the Surface
Through an exciting blend of science, storytelling, artefacts and art, Flagstaff Hill will create an exhibit which will allow visitors to immerse themselves in the fascinating maritime world of the whale. This project will interpret and tell the history of whales - from the relationship between the Aboriginal people of the Warnambool area and the sea, to European whaling methods through to our modern day love affair with these beautiful creatures we now aim to protect. Through the addition of this exhibition Flagstaff Hill will add further depth and breadth to the current visitor experience.
Flagstaff Hill will transform a currently underutilised area of the Wharf Theatre of around 60m squared to create the exhibition. This area is currently not open to the public during the day and would create an extra space for visitors to explore.
Funding is awarded for; consultation sessions, interpretation panels, production of a soundscape &amp; digital technology, and the design &amp; production of famly activity packs, education resource kits and school activities.

Polly Woodside Tall Ship Online Education Resources
The Polly Woodside Tall Ship in Melbourne delivers tailored education excursions to over 9,000 students annually in Humanities and STEM curriculum areas including History, Geography and Mathematics. In 2018, over 128 schools attended an education excursion at the Polly Woodside. There are two programs on offer – Ship shape: Ready to Sail and Maths@ Sea. These programs appeal to Primary and Secondary levels particularly Year level 4 to Year level 8. The programs are mapped to curriculum learning requirements in History, Mathematics and Geography. Themes of maritime culture, history and exploration are explored within these programs. Currently the Trust provides just a few basic education resources for teachers about the Polly Woodside that do not reflect the quality of the delivered programs and are a significant gap in delivery. The National Trust has previously developed Online Resources for other heritage sites with the History Teachers Association for Victoria and ABC Education. These have been accessible on the National Trust’s own website as well as ABC Education’s website. Funding is awarded to support the National Trust to develop free Online Teacher Resources as Pre and Post Excursion Activities for schools to access related to the maritime history and heritage. These would be mapped to meet Curriculum requirements in History, Geography, Mathematics and Science for mid-Primary levels and lower-Secondary levels.

Port of Echuca Discovery Centre $4,000
Port of Echuca, Preservation Needs Assessment
The Port of Echuca Discovery Centre last engaged a professional to undertake a Preservation Needs Assessment in 2007. In the 12 years since the original assessment was undertaken much has changed at the Port of Echuca, altering many of the recommendations outlined in the original document. In 2014 the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre was opened, including a purpose built archive repository. A small but dedicated team of volunteers are slowly working their way through mainly the paper based and photographic collection to ensure items are stored correctly in the repository. The volunteers hope that an updated Preservation Needs Assessment will provide them with guidance on best practice for storing items &amp; make recommendations for items that require urgent care. Funding is awarded to engage a qualified conservator to undertake the assessment.

Albany's Historic Whaling Station $13,250
Whaler’s Tales: Oral Histories of Albany’s past whaling community
Albany's Historic Whaling Station is a unique maritime museum and 2018 marked the 40th anniversary of the closure of the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company, in which the museum is housed, and the cessation of whaling in Australia, for which commemorative events were organised which increased and enhanced interaction between past whalers, the museum and the local community. Through this interaction it has become critically apparent that the current oral history collection is severely limited and that time is running out for this history to be suitably researched and recorded.
This project aims to expand its oral history collection for archival purposes as well as to have authentic material for application in targeted audio-visual exhibits being planned for the museum. Their mission is to “bring stories of Albany’s diverse past to life” and this project will form the foundation for the development of future interpretative applications. Funding is awarded to engage a production company to undertake interviewing, filming and editing.

Busselton Jetty Incorporated $15,000
Busselton Jetty Undersea Sculptures
Planning is underway to provide strategically placed underwater sculptures near the seaward end of the Jetty in view of the Underwater Observatory and proposed Australian Underwater Discovery Centre windows. The project will consist of three installations initially, created by local sculptors. Funding is awarded towards the design, construction and implementation of the first sculpture, a replica of the Pericles. The Pericles, 10,925-ton Ocean Liner, left London on her maiden voyage to Australia on 8 July 1908. Just after noon on 31 March 1910, five days after leaving Melbourne, the Pericles struck an unchartered rock 9.7km south of Cape Leeuwin. The ship sank shortly after. The wreck lies 5.6km south of Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse at a depth of 35 metres. The Pericles sculpture will centre on Australia’s maritime heritage and archaeology, history and marine life. It will offer great opportunity for education and aims to build greater awareness within community about the significance of maritime heritage. The sculpture will rest at a maximum depth of 8 metres, to a height of about 5-6 metres deep, fabricated from fibre-reinforced concrete. Underwater educational plaques will provide information about the Pericles, maritime history and aquatic life in the area.

To provide interactive and 3D experiences which enhance the educational value of the current display areas. &nbsp;The Holbrook Submarine Museum, Australian National Maritime Museum and the Western Australian Museum will collaborate on this project which aims to install a system in the Control Room area that reproduces historically correct commands and background noises of the day to day operations of an Oberon class submarine so that past submariners will be able to share their unique workplaces and lifestyle with their families and the general public.

Below the Waterline
The aim of this project is to develop the area below the Lady Denman Ferry, known as the Ferry Well into an accessible exhibition area for the public and to showcase the museum’s recreational craft collection, while at the same time providing a safe and clean environment that enables the objects to be appropriately cared for on a regular basis. &nbsp;The view of the hull of the Lady Denman Ferry from underneath is an impressive sight and additional interpretation of the ferry, including the copper lining of the hull and the last engine prior to restoration will provide a unique perspective of the vessel for the visitors. &nbsp;Curatorial assistance and advice is awarded for assessing the objects in this area for interpretation, and advice regarding narrative structure and potential opportunities for education links for schools. &nbsp;Funding is also awarded for the engagement of a graphic designer to design the exhibition graphics.

La Perouse Museum $10,000
A Significance Assessment and Collection Policy for the La Perouse Museum collection
La Perouse Museum opened in 1988 and currently tells the story of the Laperouse expedition, his arrival in Botany Bay in 1788 and encounter with the First Fleet, and eventual shipwreck in the Solomon Islands. Through a program of changing temporary exhibitions, the museum also looks at the ever changing Aboriginal, environmental and local history of La Perouse. &nbsp;The Museum’s collection is primarily maritime-based and features authentic movable heritage, and replica objects, relating to the French Naval Commander and Explorer Jean-Francois de Galaup, comte de Laperouse (mainly marine archaeology objects and archives from Laperouse’s resultant Atlases).
The aims of this project is to appoint an appropriate consultant to produce a Significance Assessment and related Collections Policy for La Perouse Museum in order to help raise the profile and importance of the maritime collections to new audiences, and to drive future programming, interpretation and collecting activity. &nbsp;

Darwin Military Museum $6,951
Repaint of Boom Winch and acquire Lister diesel engine
During the early stages of WWII a boom net was built across Darwin harbour to protect against submarines. Stretching for six kilometres, this was the longest anti-submarine boom net in the world. Several hundred Royal Australian Navy personnel were employed in maintaining the boom which required continuous attention due to the massive tides which occur in Darwin. &nbsp;A small fleet of specialist naval vessels were employed, including two 'gate' vessels which opened a section of the boom for friendly ships to come and go through the harbour. &nbsp;A number of these vessels came under attack during the huge raid on Darwin on 19 February 1942. &nbsp;The boom winch is in good condition and is one of few surviving artefacts related to the boom net (remains of some of the huge steel boom floats can be seen at low tide in the harbour). &nbsp;Continued preservation of the winch is vital in being able to relate the history of this passive defence mechanism (which was also used at other Australian ports but none of the others approached the length and challenges of the Darwin installation). This project will remove rust and re-paint the boom winch. &nbsp;The display will be expanded through acquisition of a Lister diesel engine which was used to drive the winch.&nbsp;

Riverside to Rainforest: Connecting Cooktown's Maritime Heritage and Scientific Discovery
This project will develop a Maritime Heritage Interpretation Strategy for Cooktown, Queensland. It will undertake research on sites of local and national significance in Cooktown with a view to develop interpretation concepts and strategies for places and landscapes linked with maritime and scientific activities between local Bama people’s and first Europeans to visit the region on HBM Endeavour in 1770. &nbsp;This grant will enable the engagement of a Heritage Architect to identify and document public spaces, sight lines and access routes that will be developed to establish strong links and routes between the maritime environment on the banks of Endeavour River and the living collections of the Cooktown Botanical Gardens.

"Water Baby" Interpretive Panels and Audio Visual
The Millmerran Historical Society plan to build a dedicated building at the Millmerran Museum to preserve and upgrade the display of the steam launch "Water Baby" which was built in 1877-1878 by the Gore family on Yandilla Station. &nbsp;To complete the presentation of Water Baby interpretive panels are needed to tell the unique story of Water Baby and its role in the historical narrative of flooding in the Condamine River and Grasstree Creek catchments, part of the upper Murray-Darling Basin River System. &nbsp;The project aims to consult a museum development officer, undertake research and produce and install interpretive panels. &nbsp;Funding is awarded for the interpretive panels.

Interpretation plan and permanent exhibit of unique 19th and 20th century artefacts in storage at the Queensland Maritime Museum
This funding will support the development of an interpretation plan and permanent exhibit focused on sharing unique 19th century objects connected to Queensland’s maritime history. &nbsp;The objects of interest include: convict leg irons, a seaman’s chest from British sailing ship Lufra, ca. 1875, a ship’s medical chest including weights and scales, snake bite cure, splints and book titled ‘The Ship Captains Medical Guide’, ‘Help by the way’: A Daily Monitor’ a book given to Miss Maggie Tran on her emigration to Qld in 1884, Handkerchief commemorating Lord Nelson’s Death at Trafalgar 1806 – an example of historic significance and representative example of a family heirloom brought to Australia by British Immigrants and a painting of SS ‘Brisbane’ by the noted British ship portraitist Richard Ball Spencer (1812 – 1897). The new permanent display will provide an opportunity to share these unique objects, and the historical significance of each object in an interesting, attractive and informative way.&nbsp;

Axel Stenross Maritime Museum $10,064
Axel Stenross Boatshed and Living Quarters—original artefact contents inventory and heritage assessment.
Following a 2016 MMAPSS grant for an assessment of Axel Stenross’ original 1940s boatshed, blacksmith shop and living quarters that are the core of the Museum, this grant is awarded for the engagement of a professional museum curator, historian or maritime archaeologist to prepare the inventory and to assess the significance of individual objects against Museums Australia criteria.
The 2016 assessment identified opportunities that may improve the presentation and interpretation of the heritage values of these buildings and their historical boat-building artefacts. The report concluded that the building is an extremely rare and important piece of Australia’s maritime history and recommended commissioning a detailed inventory of the building’s contents to identify how the current objects and their presentation relate to what was there when the boatshed ceased operation in 1980. Significantly, the inventory will provide an important archaeological record, the importance of which will increase over time.

In 2018 the Edithburgh Museum DEWNR presented the Edithburgh Museum with an array of relics and artefacts from shipwrecks pertaining to their area for them to display. &nbsp;Funding is awarded to employ a proficient carpenter to complete the housing of a display unit with Perspex cover enabling the artefacts to be housed in a safe, easily seen and easily protected area with appropriate labels and identification.

Signage for Centenary of Historic Ketch Falie 1919-2019.
Funding is awarded to produce banners to promote and help attract visitors to the open days and to give general public an opportunity to come aboard Falie and learn about her past and of its significance to the history of SA. &nbsp;The launch for the centenary year will be in January 2019 to mark the construction date of the historic ketch Falie with a public open day, providing the general public of all ages a guided tour of the Falie, above and below deck and especially the display area in the museum. &nbsp;There will be regular open days throughout the year and the banners will be in use throughout.

Restoration of the Historic 'Frenchman's Rock' Site at Penneshaw, Kangaroo Island, Stage 1
Frenchman's Rock is a memorial to the historic meeting between Captain Matthew Flinders and Captain Nicolas Baudin in Encounter Bay, South Australia. &nbsp;It was inscribed by a French sailor who was sent ashore from Nicholas Baudin’s ship ‘Le Geographe’ in 1803. &nbsp;A dome was built over the Rock in 1906 by the SA Public Buildings Department and a stone fence was erected around a well on the site in 1936; other minor work was carried out in 1986 and 1999. The site is an important asset to Penneshaw, both as an historic site and as a cultural tourist attraction. &nbsp;Situated well below road level on the foreshore of Hog Bay, Frenchman's Rock is subject to significant damage from natural run off from the road above which has been left to run through the site; water from the ‘well’ or spring in the vicinity; and exposure to coastal spray and rain. &nbsp;No significant work has been done on the site since 1999 and it has degraded significantly. &nbsp;The size of the project dictates that work will have to be undertaken in stages. &nbsp;Funding is awarded for Stage 1; to replace badly degraded interpretive signage with marine-grade materials designed to withstand the elements.&nbsp;

Friends of Tasman Island Wildcare Inc. $9,120
Tasman Island Travelling exhibition
For the design and production of an exhibition that includes pop-up banners, a walk-in lens, interactive displays and games with ‘replica-type’ objects and short film. &nbsp;The exhibition will be about Tasman Island, its lighthouse history, those who are living, and who have lived, on the island including lighthouse keepers, their families and its amazing wildlife. &nbsp;
The exhibition will be used in a variety of venues including a library, schools, museums, clubs, local history groups, halls and centres. &nbsp;It can travel in the back of a car and a person can act as an educator or it can be a stand-alone exhibition. &nbsp;
The purpose is to enable visitors and schools greater access to about information about Tasman Island and its lighthouse, retelling lighthouse keepers’ stories and sharing information about the rare and special birds, such as Lewin’s Rail, Little Penguin and Mutton birds, and other wildlife such as the rare Tasman Island cricket (Tasmanoplectron isolatum) that inhabit the island.

This project will set out to record the audio visual first-hand accounts of WWII veterans that served at the Lake Boga Catalina Base during the Second World War. This will ensure that the history of this unique facility and the role that it played are recorded for future generations. The recording of the stories of these veterans is vital for the capturing of this locally and nationally significant part of history.

Busselton Jetty School Programs.
Busselton Jetty Inc. seeks to increase awareness of the history, community value and environmental significance of the heritage listed Busselton Jetty among school aged children. By introducing a range of new, curriculum linked resources and hands-on activities that complement and enhance the current offerings, the aim is to increase visitation to the Jetty by school groups, thus allowing the telling of the Jetty story to a greater number of young people. This project plans to inspire a new generation of Jetty advocates, encouraging them to take these messages home to their family and friends and increase the overall awareness within the community of the need to preserve and maintain this important historical landmark into the future. &nbsp;Funding is awarded for aquariums to assist with the internal fit out of the SeaLab.&nbsp;

Lismore by the Sea
The Society holds a number of artefacts relating to specific vessels that served on the North Coast run. &nbsp;This project is for the reorganization of the maritime display to contemporary professional standard with inclusion of interpretive media to elicit the role of the North Coast Steam Navigation Company in the maritime history of the region. Consultants will be engaged to facilitate the production of the display. Some unique and valuable artefacts relating to this story, including a lantern from the ‘Lady Franklin’, and a sextant, parallel rules and dividers owned by captain Hunter, master of the first ‘Wollongbar’ that was wrecked in Byron Bay in 1921 will be rehoused in display cabinets for highlighting and protection.

The Tathra Surf Boat is a wooden framed, canvas covered double ended craft. The proposed project aims to ensure appropriate and ongoing public access to the vessel by undertaking preservation and interpretation of the craft which is rare and important part of the museum’s collection. &nbsp;The vessel has recently been listed on the Australian Register for Historic Vessels (ARHV) and the proposed project is based on recommendations contained in the vessel’s Conservation and Interpretation Plan.

To have two significant oil paintings in the Maritime Museum’s collection repaired and conserved. The works, created by Chinese artists in Hong Kong are ships’ portraits of the Mary Blair and Wild Wave, two Tasmanian vessels engaged in the China trade around the 1860s. &nbsp;They can then be shared with the museum's community and visitors, along with the fascinating story Tasmania’s trade links with China during the 1800s.

For conservation treatment of a model ship made by Crowdy Head Lighthouse Keeper Thomas Thornley. &nbsp;The object was assessed under a MMAPSS funded project in 2014-15 titled ‘Waterways Objects – Conservator Assessment and Condition Reports’ arranged by Museums Australia - Mid North Coast Chapter. This project assessed 6 objects in the MVHS collection (48 in total) and identified that this object was in need of conservation work to clean, repair and stabilise it to prevent further damage/deterioration.

Securing the Future of the First Tathra Surf Boat
For the first surf boat used by the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club, on the south coast of NSW. &nbsp;The Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club was formed in 1910 and is one of the oldest surf lifesaving clubs in NSW. &nbsp;The boat was once clad in oiled canvas, a fragment of which remains on the boat. &nbsp;This project is to ensure the security and longevity of this surf boat, by seeking an initial conservation management plan for the vessel.
Funding support is awarded for an ANMM Curator to visit Bega and Tathra to conduct an inspection of the boat, assess its significance, prepare its nomination for the Australian Register for Historic Vessels and assist in the preparation of a management plan.

For upgraded access to the engine room of this organisations Freemantle Class naval patrol boat "HMAS Gladstone" which is on permanent display at 'East Shores' beside Gladstone Harbour. &nbsp;The Society are working to set up the vessel for inspection tours. &nbsp;Funding is awarded to engage a consultant to provide design and engineering for suitable access.

Bringing back the oldest paddle steamer in South Australia to life, the PS Mayflower to its 1913 era
The Mannum Dock Museum purchased the PS Mayflower in 2014. The long term objective is to restore operate and interpret the vessel based on the 1913 era configuration as a fishing reach vessel and family home paddle steamer.
Funding is awarded for stage 10 and 11 of the restoration project; Stage 10: For the lower deck: clad walls, build and fit doors, windows, fit toilets, hand basins, surrounds, sink, plumbing, handrails. &nbsp;Stage 11: the top cabin / deck; frame up, roof and lining, clad walls, lay cabin floor, fix facias, lay top deck, coat, build and fit doors, windows, hand rails, stair case.

In line with the Vessel Management Plan, this project aims to conserve, through the process of repair, restoration and rebuilding, the River Murray paddle steamer the PS Canally. &nbsp;Funding is awarded to engage an engineer for Stage 2 of the VMP - to restore a Marshall 20hp steam reciprocating engine and install it in the PS Canally.

For an ANMM Fleet Shipwright to visit and deliver a workshop on wooden boat building skills. &nbsp;Having been debriefed by members of the PESLSC, beforehand, the Shipwright will provide expertise on the best ways to preserve, maintain and improve the vessel’s condition into the future. &nbsp;The invitation to the workshop will be extended to other relevant organisations in the region.

Devonport City Council - Bass Strait Maritime Centre $4,455
Telling the story of Julie Burgess
Funding is awarded for a graphic designer to develop interpretation for panels to be installed at the mooring of the Julie Burgess in Reg Hope Park.
The ARHV listed former crayfishing ketch has been fully restored with modifications to comply with the current AMSA survey conditions. &nbsp;The ketch undertakes regular two hour sails out of the Mersey River into Bass Strait, charters and tours.

Port of Echuca Discovery Centre $8,000
Preserving Australia's History - Restoring the iconic Log Slip at Echuca Wharf
Funding is to engage professional services to undertake a preservation survey of the Echuca log winch, one of the oldest surviving original pieces of equipment relating to early 20th Century red gum timber milling. &nbsp;The bigger project to which this project relates will reinstate the original log skid attached to the log winch and preserve it as a working exhibit. &nbsp;The restoration of the log winch and slip would complete the story at the Port as the Paddle steamers, barges, sawmills, railway station and steam train are all in place as part of the displays at the Echuca Wharf.

Yarrawonga Mulwala Interpretive Signage Project
Funding is for 3 (of 18) signs with maritime content to be placed around Lake Mulwala to provide the public with a working knowledge of the history of Lake Mulwala and surrounds. &nbsp;QR codes will be utilized to provide more detailed information. &nbsp;The maritime signage will be included largely under the theme of submerged Lake Mulwala. &nbsp;In 1939 the weir was completed and Lake Mulwala was filled, flooding the surrounding valley and submerging maritime artefacts of significance such as Yorta Yorta Artefacts, Halburds Punt, and Paddle Steamers.

Audio Tour – mobile phone/portable device App (Application)
The &nbsp;Duyfken &nbsp;Replica &nbsp;Foundation &nbsp;has &nbsp;been &nbsp;invited &nbsp;to &nbsp;participate &nbsp;in &nbsp;the &nbsp;Dirk &nbsp;Hartog &nbsp;400th Anniversary celebrations on 25 October 2016 at Cape Inscription, Dirk Hartog Island. &nbsp;To support the ceremony program at Cape Inscription, the Duyfken will undertake a 3.5 month, voyage. &nbsp;The Duyfken Foundation has developed an App based Audio Tour that will guide visitors at the port visits on their journey through Duyfken. &nbsp;Funding is for costs related to the app development.

Program for the Rottnest Island Interpretation of Shipwrecks and Maritime Heritage (PRIISMH)
The project aims to: 1. Enhance the Rottnest Island content of the existing ‘Shipwrecks WA’ website and smart phone app. 2. Undertake research plus undertake manual and 3D recording of terrestrially visible anchors on Rottenest Island (RI). &nbsp;3. Support the renovation of one signage from the terrestrial shipwreck trail on RI and 4. Implement detailed 3D mapping of shipwrecks around RI. &nbsp;Funding is awarded for 3D processing of underwater data, 3D training workshops, to design, build and install signs and for website and app content work.

Nyamba Buru Yawuru Ltd $10,000
Mapping the pearling heritage of northern Australia
For the development of a digital database of the pearling heritage sites of northern Australia. This work will build on the initial version of the map currently touring via the exhibition ‘Lustre’. &nbsp;The data, including audio visual material, will be collated and the sites will be mapped in multiple and composite layers by GIS (geographical information system) by a cartographer.

Norfolk Island Museum – In Kind Support
his project is to ensure the ongoing care of the HMS Sirius collection as recommended by previous condition and conservation reports. ANMM Manager Conservation, will facilitate ANMM support to review the collection items and to provide a report on the condition of the collection.

Albury City Council - Albury Library Museum $4,240
For an integrated Murray River experience located at both the Albury Library Museum and Murray Riverside Precinct that increases access to and engagement with Albury's unique maritime history. Funding is awarded for the costs associated with the production of three external story boards.

Ballina Naval and Maritime Museum $5,500
Funding is awarded to conduct a 3D laser scan of the vessel Florrie and to engage a specialist with timber vessel conservation expertise to assist the museum’s executive and volunteers to undertake identified immediate/short term conservation works to Florrie. This project will also result in a formalised Conservation Management Plan, prepared collaboratively between the museum and Ballina Shire Council and with the assistance of an expert in heritage management.

Berry and District Historical Society – In Kind Support
The Berry Flood boat, is an 1888, clinker built, 24 foot vessel. An ANMM curator will provide support to review the significance of the vessel, assess the suitability of including the vessel on the Australian Register for Historic Vessels (ARHV) and to assist with the development of a Conservation Management Plan.

Clarence Town &amp; District Historical Museum Inc. – In Kind Support
ANMM Production and Lighting Manager will provide support to this organisation in their plans for improvements to displaying documents, photographs and memorabilia of the history of the Steam Ship building industry on the Williams River, the river trade of the early 1800’s, and the village of Clarence Town. Support will include the ANMM's offer of donated showcases and assistance to assess the suitability these showcases to the Museum and their display.

Funding is for interpretive signage and an information kit as part of the Council's Jetty Walkway project which is being constructed as an entry to the historic (1890/92) jetty.

Funding is awarded to develop and add 7 entries of unique content and an overall essay, on the arrival of the Second Fleet to this digital education resource. Written by local researchers, authors and historians, the essays will capture historical detail of the Second Fleet presented with contemporary resonances.

Funding is for the commissioning of a bespoke display case and object support alongside the development of visual, text and audio interpretation for the ARHV listed Bunumbert bark canoe.

Funding is to engage a consultant to complete the recording of the museum’s collection into the museum’s electronic data base. This work will enable them to find the best material to put together quality exhibitions, increase access to the collection and secure nationally significant objects, in line with their 2014 significance assessment.

ANMM Head of Research, Maritime Archaeology Exploration and Navy, will provide support by organising an ANMM representative to review the Commonwealth Lighthouse Service (CLS) museum collection items and to assist with an initial collection assessment.

Port Macquarie Historical Society $2,215
For conservation treatments and storage materials for two objects in the Port Macquarie Historical Society collection. The Cargo Manifest Book, PS Ballina, (1870s) and a Painting, ‘Just arrived at Cundletown’ by Dr G H Bruhn, (1858). These two objects were assessed in a 2014 Conservator Assessment and Condition Report by Preservation Australia and identified as requiring priority treatment.

Port of Yamba Historical Society – In Kind Support
This organisation has researched Australian surfing pioneer, Tommy Walker, whose story challenges the currently celebrated story that surfing was brought to Australia by Hawaiian surfer Duke Kahanamoku. ANMM Senior Curator Communities will provide support to review the significance of this story and advice about telling the story.

Port Stephens Historical Society Inc $10,000
Funding is for the manufacture of 10 anodised aluminium interpretive signs displaying photographic and factual information to be located along public walkways. The signage will acknowledge the use of the marine environment including the Worimi Nation, the early European explorers and settlers, the businesses, various naval undertakings and today’s sea farers.

Shoalhaven City Council – In Kind Support
The flood boat ‘Shoalhaven’ embodies key elements of the region’s heritage: cedar, floods and river flat settlement. This organisation plans for the vessel include seeking professional assessment, conservation work, relocation with interpretation signage. An ANMM curator will provide support by sighting the vessel, reviewing the existing Conservation Management Plan (CMP) and providing professional assessment of the proposed conservation works and relocation.

Buku Larrnggay Mulka – In Kind Support
This organisation aims to create high quality archival scans of their collection of bark paintings which articulate Yolngu culture and depict sea country. ANMM Manager Conservation and ANMM Manager Indigenous Programs will provide support to oversee the use of bark paintings from the ANMM collection for a test scan.

Bli Bli on Maroochy Historical Society $2,085
Funding is awarded to digitise and preserve photographic types include 100 plus 6”x4” glass negatives; albumen, carte de viste; and gelatin silver prints in their collection which document the occupation and development of the Maroochy River region from the mid 1800’s to the present day. This work will provide greater capacity for online public access to their collections. Archival storage materials, albums and containers will also be purchased to appropriately store and preserve the collections.

For stage 3 of the vessel restoration plan, for the Bunda-La, an ARHV listed 1958 ex-pilot boat, used in service along the Queensland coast.

National Trust of South Australia – Willunga Branch $6,135
To relocate and upgrade an interpretive exhibit about the wreck of the Star of Greece off Port Willunga in 1888, an event with close historical links with the region. The exhibit will include a number of significant items about the vessel that the Willunga Branch of the National Trust holds in its collection as well as information about other wrecks in the region.

Funding is awarded to engage an educational consultant and for materials production. This project will map the Whyalla Maritime Museum's collection and tour guide activities to the Australian History Curriculum as well as develop teacher and student resources for key experiences and specific maritime history topics.

Axel Stenross Maritime Museum Inc. – In Kind Support
An ANMM curator will be available to provide support by reviewing the Vessel Management Plan for the vessel Hecla and provide professional assessment of proposed conservation works.

Channel Heritage and Folk Museum Association – In Kind Support
An ANMM curator will provide support to review the significance of a 16’ lifeboat from the former river ferry, the Excella. Support will also include assessing the suitability of including the vessel on the Australian Register for Historic Vessels (ARHV) and to assist with establishing provenance and the development of a Vessel Management Plan (VMP).

Maritime Museum of Tasmania $9,690
Funding is for a display illustrating the history of navigation from the stars, tides and lodestones used by early navigators, to modern satellite navigation relating to Tasmania’s maritime history. The display will include; a star installation, 6 graphic panels, a cut out removable mural, instruments, a chart table, a theodolite (approx. 1889) used to chart the Huon River, an interactive showing the use of lead lines to determine the type of bottom beneath a ship, a simulator which would allow visitors to steer a ship.

Tasmanian Fast Ferry Museum – In Kind Support
ANMM Head of Learning, will provide support and advice as this organisation works to develop an education program available to lower and upper primary levels and to build an education audience.

Enterprize Ship Trust – In Kind Support
The reproduction of the 1830's vessel, the Enterprize, was built between 1991-1997 and undertakes school education and sailing programs to provide the opportunity to experience a sailing conditions on an 1830’s type of vessel. Team Leader and rigger for the HMB Endeavour will provide support through expert advice and guidance about the conservation of the vessel, now in its 18th year of operation.

Enterprize Ship Trust – In Kind Support
On 30 August 2015 Melbourne will celebrate 180 years since the arrival of the original Enterprize. This organisation plans to develop an educational information pack suitable for schools and other community groups including interactive material suitable for hearing impaired children. ANMM Head of Learning will provide in-kind to support this organisation and investigate potential opportunities for points of collaboration with the ANMM.

Funding is to extend the available augmented reality (AR) narrative on the paddle steamer “Gem” to two additional areas ‐ the Engine Room and The Wheelhouse to enhance the telling of the stories of the people of the Murray river.

Funding is to engage a consultant to undertake a full significance assessment of their collection pieces. This organisation will use the significance assessment to guide the revision of their policies and procedures and to direct the focus of their exhibitons on approximaltey 5 key stories from their existing collection.

Busselton Historical Society $6,275
Funding is awarded for a shipwreck walk on the museum’s land which is located on the banks of the picturesque Vasse River. The walk with give account of local shipwrecks via a weather proof information booklet, a map and plaques.

Busselton Jetty Environment and Conservation Association $3,000
This project will educate visitors in an interactive and fun way about the history of the heritage listed Busselton Jetty as a port and the critical role that marine bollards have played to secure heavy ships. Funding is awarded for interpretive signage to be developed in a Q&amp;A format that leads visitors from one bollard to another on the Jetty to search for the answer to maritime questions. The information discovered will tell the story of 'mushroom bollards', 'bollards on ships', 'mooring lines', 'buffers', 'piles', 'spring ropes' and the timber industry ships that relied upon the bollards, rain, hail or shine.

Jaycees Community Foundation Inc t/as Discovery Bay Tourism Experience $3,990
Funding is awarded for the design and installation of interpretation panels for the Cheynes IV to inform visitors of the role that the ship (and her crew) played in Australia's whaling story. These panels will complement the existing audio re-enactment of a whale chase.
