Growing to a maximum 2 metres in length and weighing 10-15 kg, ŋuykal, also called yellowtail kingfish, is found from south Queensland to Western Australia, and throughout temperate oceans around the world. Highly mobile, this species of fish enjoys both solitary swimming and schooling, not only with others of its kind but also with other similar fish.

Ŋuykal was once also found in great numbers in Sydney Harbour. The widespread use of Yellowtail fish traps, which are now prohibited,  decimated the population of the species, some research indicates by as much as 60%.
